DIR. CELINE DANHIER | 2010 | FRANCE | 94 MIN

Blank City tells the exciting story of a renegade band of filmmakers who emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous moment in New York history. In the late 1970s and mid 80s, when the city was still a wasteland, these directors crafted daring works that would go on to profoundly influence the development of independent film as we know it today.

Explosive, hilarious and jam packed with rare footage, Blank City features compelling interviews with acclaimed directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, John Lurie, Debbie Harry, Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore, photographer Richard Kern as well as Amos Poe, James Nares, Eric Mitchell, Susan Seidelman, Beth B, Scott B, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd. Fittingly, the soundtrack includes: Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, The Contortions, The Bush Tetras, Sonic Youth and many more.

Our screening of Blank City is generously sponsored by CKUW.

DIR. TAGGART SIEGEL | 2010 | USA | 83 MIN

In the fall of 2006, newspapers around the United States began to publicize an unnerving phenomenon. Honeybees were mysteriously disappearing from beehives all around the nation. Dave Hackenburg, an outspoken beekeeper, and the first to raise a stir about the crisis, reported that bees were simply vanishing from his hives.

Queen of the Sun: What are the bees telling us? is an in-depth investigation to discover the causes and solutions behind Colony Collapse Disorder; a phenomenon where honeybees vanish from their hives, never to return. Filmed around the world from New Zealand to Italy the film is also an entertaining and colourful look at bees and the importance of organic farming practices. The film reflects the voices and visions of underrepresented beekeepers, philosophers, and scientists from around the world, all struggling for the survival of the bees.
