DIR. AKI KAURISMÄKI | 2011 | FRANCE/FINLAND | 93 MIN - (French w/English Subtitles)
Working in his usual rich vein of dark humour and deadpan characterizations worthy of a Buster Keaton film, Aki Kaurismäki (Leningrad Cowboys Go America, The Match Factory Girl) has created a dryly comic story of the refugee problem in Europe.
In this warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa into the path of Marcel Marx, a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoeshiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight.
Le Havre is Finland's entry for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Academy Awards.

DIR. WERNER HERZOG | 2010 | FRANCE/USA/GERMANY/UK/CANADA | 90 MIN
Iconic director Werner Herzog once again takes us deep behind the frontier of an extraordinary place. Having gained unprecedented access through the tightest of restrictions and overcome considerable technical challenges, he has captured the interior of the Chauvet Cave in southern France. This is where the world’s oldest cave paintings – hundreds in number - were discovered in 1994.
In the mesmerising Cave of Forgotten Dreams, he reveals to us a breathtaking subterranean world and leads us to the 32,000-year-old artworks. In that deeply moving moment of encounter, we come face to face with pristine and astonishingly realistic drawings of horses, cattle and lions, which for the briefest second come alive in the torchlight. In true Herzogian fashion, his hypnotically engaging narration weaves in wider metaphysical contemplations as we learn more about the Paleolithic art and its creators. Through his understated and gently humorous voiceover, we are invited to reflect on our primal desire to communicate and represent the world around us, evolution and our place within it, and ultimately what it means to be human.

Winter can feel like forever in Winnipeg especially if you are cooped up indoors with kids. To warm up those cold winter days and get out of the house we present the return of our annual kid’s film series.
According to many critics The Wizard of Oz has been seen by more people around the world than any other film. Who can forget the story of a young girl named Dorothy who is swept away to the magical land of Oz and must find her way back home to Kansas with the help of the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion. The film is now enhanced with on screen lyrics to sing along to all your favourite songs such as “Somewhere over the Rainbow” and “Follow the Yellow Brick Road.”

If you enjoyed the three day pastry contest in France in The Kings of Pastry, then you will love this entertaining story of 24 year old gourmet chef Paul Liebrandt who concocts incredible mouth watering dishes to build his reputation in the cut throat world of haute cuisine in New York City. The film follows Liebrandt over a decade and reveals his creative process in the kitchen, as well as the extreme hard work, long hours, and dedication it takes to be a culinary artist. In 2000, Chef Paul Liebrandt was awarded 3 stars by the New York Times - at 24 he was the youngest to receive such acclaim.
