The successful Bands Versus Filmmakers returns for a second year to raise funds for Cinematheque
BY: NICHOLAS FRIESEN
Model/actress. Poet/dancer. Musician/filmmaker. In Winnipeg, no one is ever just one thing. So when it comes time for the bands and the filmmakers to face off for a good cause, people that do both are forced to choose sides.
Puppeteer/filmmaker/musician Curtis Wiebe has been making films for about five years, and is naturally a card-carrying member of the Winnipeg Film Group. Since many of his films have screened before features at Cinematheque, it only made sense that Wiebe should take part in Bands Versus Filmmakers, a fundraising event for the beloved theatre in the Artspace building. A success last year that involved short sets from local musicians accented by projected images from local filmmakers, it all goes down tonight at 8 p.m. at the West End Cultural Centre.
"I can’t say no to Dave (Barber, Cinematheque Programming Coordinator)," Wiebe says. "He's done a lot of work promoting my stuff so this is my chance to give back a little bit."
The collaborators include Wiebe with the Magnificent 7s, Rhayne Vermette with Sit Down Tracy, Scott Fitzpatrick with This Hisses, Stephane Oystryk with Cannon Bros and Danisha Esterhazy with Nova.
With two months to prep their 20 minute sets/films, everyone seems to be taking their own path.
