Reporter Correspondent (Winnipeg)
The Reporter Correspondent structures, researches, write, develops and reports stories/ ideas for APTN News
and Current Affairs for multi platform use, and adheres to the highest journalistic standards, procedures and
practices for APTN News and Current Affairs productions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Initiates, identifies, researches and submits/pitches story ideas on a daily basis;
- Structures, researches, writes and develops approved pitches or assigned stories for multi platform use;
- Evaluates leads / tips, interviews sources, etc, and assesses newsworthiness for APTN specific viewers / audiences;
- Prepares full-pack stories and scripts, including / recommending visuals, graphics, etc. based on all sources research, and submits scripts for approval;
- Represents APTN by serving as the face viewers recognize, presents news and current affairs stories, and as a representative, seeks to maintain the excellent reputation of APTN at all times;
- Creates rough edit of stories, and works with the team to finalize item(s);
- May be responsible for overseeing assignment location and content;
- Participates in training and internship programs as appropriate;
- Organizes travel and equipment logistics as required;
- Monitors national and local news and events for relevancy and stays informed on current and emerging issues;
- May be asked to represent APTN on-air and/or in public forums;
- May also be responsible for other activities such as office administration, including petty cash, vehicle logs, reception, tours, supplies, and general workplace safety.
- Assists other team members and carries out other duties as needed and assigned;
- Develops and maintains sources and contacts for News gathering purpose.
- Remains aware of all National issues relevant to Aboriginal communities;
Requirements:
- Degree or Diploma in Journalism or related field, and three years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge of Internet, software, E-mail and television broadcast technology is required;
- Ability to articulate and effectively communicate issues relevant to Aboriginal communities;
- Travel may be required with very short notice and may require overnight stays / extended hours as assigned;
- Valid driver’s license with abstract.
As this position is part of a bargaining unit, the successful candidate will operate under the collective
agreement with the Canadian Media Guild
