CARTOON CONNECTION CANADA - EU: October 18-20
TAC: October 20-21, 2010
OIAF: October 20-24, 2010
Cartoon Connection Canada EU is expanding their network in Ottawa
TAC and the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) are very excited to announce CARTOON CONNECTION Canada -EU, a new networking event co-organized with the producers of Cartoon Forum and Cartoon Movie. With the help of MEDIA INTERNATIONAL, Cartoon will be bringing over 40 European animation producers, broadcasters and distributors eager to meet their Canadian counterparts to the event.
We are now accepting applications from Canadian producers who are interested in participating in this event. The philosophy behind Cartoon Connection (which has also run in Korea and Argentina) is intense networking within a small group. Attendance will be capped at 100. This means we can only take 60 Canadian delegates and we are asking that only one producer attend from each company. A basic selection process is in place to determine both Canadian and European delegations. Invitations for the Canadian delegation were sent to producers and production companies listed in our Canadian Animation Directory.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The goal of CARTOON CONNECTION is to allow you to expand your professional network.
Sample Delegation:
Follow the link below for a run-down of the Europeans who participated Cartoon Connection Korea. Interest in the Canadian edition is extremely high, so we expect a high-caliber delegation.
http://www.cartoon-media.eu/CONNECT/con_listof.php?id=4
The event will have two components:
• Information sessions about the distinct markets to understand how each of them works, analyzing the reality and the difficulties of European-Canadian co-productions through case studies
• One-on-one meetings (10 minutes for each meeting) which will allow you to meet European professionals and present upcoming projects (for cooperation or co-production) or existing series and/or films (for sales and distribution), while getting the run down on European projects.
ALSO: Should co-productions between Canada and Europe eventually be signed, the Canadian producers will be entitled to participate at the two biggest co-production animation markets in Europe (Cartoon Forum for TV series and Cartoon Movie for animated features).
When will this take place?
The event will take place before and during TAC at the Chateau Laurier in downtown Ottawa. Opening the evening of Monday, October 18 at a networking dinner, Cartoon Connection will run until Wednesday, October 20, overlapping TAC. Regular TAC activities such as Fast Track, Pitch THIS! and some networking events will run until Thursday, October 21. Your participation in TAC is encouraged and highly recommended for further networking opportunities.
How much does it cost?
We are still in negotiations with funders to keep the cost of this additional event as low as possible. Participants must purchase a TAC Animapass or TAC Only pass in order to be take part in Cartoon Connection (starting at $400 CAD). You may incur an extra fee for the Cartoon Connection portion, if funders are unable to fully support the event. This information will be disseminated once a final delegate list is determined.

“Both the director and producer must have at least one hour-long television documentary credit, and may not have more than one feature-length (75 minutes+) documentary credit. If a co-producer is attached, they must meet the eligibility requirements regarding credits.”
Contest closes at 5pm MST on September 3, 2010. Late entries will not be accepted.
Following on the success of the Super Catalyst Emerging Screenwriter Award, Super Channel is keeping it real in offering this opportunity for two documentary director/producer teams with credits in hour-long television, to make the leap to feature length documentaries.
“Super Channel is a proud supporter of Canadian production and is pleased to offer opportunities to those who aspire to produce feature length documentaries,” said Marguerite Pigott, Super Channel Creative Development Group Lead.
The award program begins in late September, and winners will work with mentors to prepare projects for pitching in time for the TDF in May 2011. Winners will attend the TDF as observers, and use this opportunity to meet with potential broadcasters, executive producers or other potential partners.
“We are thrilled that Super Channel is encouraging emerging director/producer teams in the production of feature length documentaries,” Elizabeth Radshaw, TDF Director.
For More information about the award, eligibility, submission requirements and deadlines is available at Super Channel Producers' Page.

8 companies and 8 Industry leaders were featured during a 43-minute video showcasing some of our brightest and most innovative new media superstars. Since screening that showcase and marketing it to businesses across North America, the individuals and companies that participated have generated an additional $551,000 in new business for themselves over the past 7 months.
New Media Manitoba would like to do it again.
They want to hear stories about your business. They're looking for personal stories, stories that excite, touch, inspire, make people want to follow their passions and become part of the New Media business community in Manitoba.
You may not think you even have a story but we're betting you do! It doesn't matter if you're a big company, or just a one person operation, you have something unique about you to share.
Start by sending us an e-mail and answering the following questions:
Who are you?
What does your business do?
What is exciting, touching, inspiring about your business?
Do you have any unique stories or events that have happened at your business?
How has the New Media business community in Manitoba and/or NMM helped your business?
Include full contact information (phone number, email, website) and links to projects, if applicable.

If you are selected you will need to be available for the month of July to be filmed. You'll be responsible for sharing support graphics, videos, and animations with us to include in the profile.
One small caveat I'll mention is that they're still working on getting all the resources in place to shoot the videos and have a similar IMAX event like last year. It costs a fair bit of money to host an event of this size so we're seeking sponsorship. If you know of someone that can help support this initiative with some investment please let us know.

Hello to Members and People Who Wish to Become Members (Why aren’t you a member yet? It’s so EASY! Just call and we’ll set you up!)
JUNE 15th! What is so special about June 15th?
WELL!
If you’re applying to the Marketing Plan Program (MPP), the once a year deadline is JUNE 15TH! This rolls Access to Markets, Access to Festivals, and the Professional Marketing Plan into one application to cover the whole year. The MPP supports established production companies, and can include events already attended, going back to April 1st and extending to March 31st, 2011. If you have already accessed AtoF and AtoM this year, those contributions will be rolled into MPP if the jury accepts your application.
The Corporate Capacity Growth Program’s first deadline is also JUNE 15TH. For those of you in attendance recently at the Town Hall at Midcan, The New Realities Of Screen-Based Media In Canada, or the lucky few who hit the Alexander Manu iAccelerator at Studios in the Exchange you will be happy to know that MULTI PLATFORM EXPLORATION is an eligible project. Timely! The app and guidelines are available at http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/programs as well, and as always, you can contact Angela or Claudia at On Screen Manitoba with all questions.
By the way, a mind-expanding time was had by all, both on a professional and personal development level, at the Alexander Manu iAccelerator. WE can’t wait to get Alexander back here again. Next time, do whatever you have to do to come to learn from this professor of innovation, imagination, and strategic foresight. I am still buzzing from this, to use an old 60’s term, “happening”.
AND if you are planning a Market trip to points anywhere in the world with your fabulous Made-in-Manitoba projects, expanding your already big brain via a Professional Development opportunity, or have been invited to screen your “worth every moment” finished work at a Festival, the deadlines are 30 days prior to the event or opportunity. You can download the applications and guidelines for Access to Markets, the Professional Development Plan, and Access to Festivals at http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/programs
Click here for some upcoming deadlines, by no means a definitive list. If you have a festival or Market Event not listed here that you are planning on attending, call me and ask if it’s eligible.
Stay dry this weekend if possible!

Film Training Manitoba (FTM) and the National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) present "2010 Script Analysis Program with Marlene Rodgers."
Manitoba screenwriters can apply to be one of three Manitoba feature film projects to benefit from working with experienced story editor Marlene Rodgers (an alumna of NSI Features First) with the goal of developing market-ready feature film projects. Feature length scripts and treatments for feature films of all genres are eligible. Training takes place June through August 2010.
Applications must be submitted by noon, Friday, April 23 to Film Training Manitoba, 100-62 Albert St. Winnipeg, MB, R3B 1E9.
Get full details and an application form
A non-refundable submission fee of $95 for each script or treatment must be included. Submissions by fax or email will not be accepted.
All rights remain with the writer. FTM and NSI have no proprietary interest in the projects.
A jury comprised of three Manitoba industry professionals will determine the three finalists by mid May. The non-finalists will receive a one page reader’s report from the jury to help writers improve their work.
Training will be comprised of an initial meeting in May, provision of notes and submission of script rewrites in July and August, and conclude with a table read of each script with actors in August. The value of this training is $3,000 per script.
"We’re excited to provide this opportunity to develop three Manitoba screenwriters,” says Neila Benson, Executive Director of FTM. “We’re confident that this type of intensive work with Marlene will lead to three strong scripts ready to attract interest from production companies.”
Adds Liz Janzen, Director of Programming for NSI, "We are pleased to partner with FTM on this opportunity for writers. NSI's philosophy is one of learning by doing, and what better way to learn the screenwriting craft than to work on your project with a story editor, and then to hear your words come to life with a table read. This program will be invaluable to the scripts that are selected for the training."
About the story editor
Marlene Rodgers is a writer, producer and story editor who loves to help filmmakers to tell their stories. Early in her career, she worked as a development executive at Canadian funding agencies and the CBC Movies and Mini-Series Unit. As a story editor, Marlene has assisted countless screenwriters in bringing their vision to the page, and has mentored filmmakers at NSI, Canadian Film Centre and Praxis. She works primarily in the independent feature film sector, but also story edits on television series for the Food Network and W Network. Marlene is currently developing her first feature film, SKIN TO SKIN (an NSI Features First project), expected to shoot in 2010.

‘My Gimli’ Short Film Contest
Gimli Film Festival
July 21-25, 2010
Gimli, Manitoba
In 2007, filmmaker Guy Maddin released his much-lauded pseudo-documentary My Winnipeg, a portrait of his hometown that was notoriously light on hard fact, but filled to bursting with style, humor and what Maddin characterized as “emotional truth” – a sort of truth that perhaps hits closer to home than the more traditional kind. Now the Gimli Film Festival would like your help to apply those same qualities to its own bailiwick.
What is it about the small lakeside town of Gimli that has attracted and inspired so many filmmakers and film lovers over the years? In the early days of cinema, Hollywood pioneers chose the Manitoba immigrant community as a setting for their 1917 epic Wild Goose Chase. The town achieved Midnight Movie fame with Guy Maddin’s Tales from the Gimli Hospital, and it has created a thriving film festival. The Gimli Film Festival’s My Gimli Short Film Contest aims to both highlight and continue this tradition. Clearly there is something special about Gimli, and the challenge that participants in this contest will face is how best to express it on film in five minutes or less.
We invite filmmakers to create a short tribute to, or history of the town – with actual historical facts being completely optional of course. Your film may be shot in Gimli or in Timbuktu, as long as that Gimli spirit is somehow captured. You yourself need not have ever set foot in the town – invention, concoction and outright fabrication are all very much allowed here. It’s the spirit that counts.
Films may be in any style and take any point of view: we are not expecting paeans to Gimli, or travelogues, or boosterism of any kind, though that will certainly be accepted. Nor do we require that your film be stylistically similar to My Winnipeg; it may be a documentary of unexampled realism, a narrative piece with actors, a formalist exercise or a hyper-stylized abstract. It may be live action, animated or a combination of both.
Films will be judged on two main points: pure cinematic quality and the effectiveness with which it captures and communicates the essence of Gimli. The decision of the jury will be considered final.
Eligibility: The film must be no longer than five minutes in length.
Deadline: The film must be received by June 15, 2010, and the winner will be declared on July 7, 2010.
Award: The winner will receive The My Gimli Award, one-night stay at the Lakeview Resort and an All Access Pass to the festival.
Delivery: Your film must be sent as a Quicktime file to mygimli@gimlifilm.com. Films not received on time or in a viewable quality will not be considered.
Questions can be directed to 204-642-8846 or info@gimlifilm.com

RECONTRES INTERNATIONALES DU DOCUMENTAIRE DE MONTREAL (RIDM)
November 10 - 21, 2010
Montreal, Canada
Submissions for the RIDM 13th edition, which will take place from November 10th to 21st 2010. Please read carefully the regulations before submitting a film.
Entry deadlines: June 15, 2010 for international films, June 30, 2010 for Québec/Canadian films.
An annual event with an international scope, the RIDM is now in its 13th year. Each edition offers some one hundred films from the four corners of the world, with a focus on films that stand out for their unique vision and artistic merit. The RIDM is a meeting place like no other in North America.
Categories of the official program of the RIDM 2010:
Camera-Stylo
It is a selection of films that stand out for the distinctive approach of each director, the strikingly personal quality of the writing, and the profound humanness of the characters, showing the best and the worst we are capable of. These films are veritable barometers of the world around us. Films that take the time to seek out the Other.
Camera at the Ready
To explore in depth the sociopolitical issues of our constantly changing world. To give a voice to those at the heart of the issues. To take an informed look at breaking news and individual stories that awaken our consciousness and understanding of the world. To brandish a camera like a loudspeaker that educates, disturbs and asks questions. That's what Camera at the Ready films set out to do.
EcoCamera
Scientific and environmental issues are being dealt with by an increasing number of documentarians. As part of its mission to support citizen action, the RIDM introduced this section on science and the environment.
DocTape
Defined as “outside the box”, the DocTape section includes films whose approach is innovative while not necessarily sensationalistic. These docs take you into uncharted waters, and highlight the more marginal perspectives. Our aim is to counter common prejudices about the documentary genre, too often falsely considered dull, didactic or heavy. Innovative, catchy and daring films are screened in this section, a category bound to seduce new audiences not previously fans of documentary.

We are now accepting applications for the Professional Marketing Fund, with a twist. Due to the timing of the funding for the ACCESS Programs, we were unable to start this program in the spring as usual, so for this year, we are accepting applications retroactive to April 1, 2009.
This means we can accept applications for a full year's worth of activities, and instead of breaking the payment into two, we will pay up to $3000 per successfully juried application, per production company, in one lump sum less administration fee. The program is limited this fiscal year to contributing marketing support to about three companies.
The application is to cover all activities between April 1, 2009 and March 31st, 2010.
The deadline is March 15th, 2010 (sorry, no extensions or exceptions will be accepted on this call for applications). As we understand there may be a few straggling March marketing activities to finish off, the final report deadline is April 30th, 2010 (any Final Report deadline issues successful applicants may have can be discussed with the Programs Coordinator). The cheques will be released only upon approval of the final report of the sucessful applicants.
If you have any questions, please contact Angela Kuehl, Programs Coordinator, at 204-927-5891 or angela@onscreenmanitoba.com

PROCEDURES
The PROFESSIONAL MARKETING FUND normally accepts applications throughout the year, subject to the availability of funds. 2010 is an exception, due to lateness of approval of ACCESS Programs funding:
Applications must be submitted to ON SCREEN MANITOBA no later than March 15th, 2010 (no exceptions or extensions) and must include: a corporate profile for the applicant production company, completed applicant marketing plan information form, a description of current projects in pre-production and development, copies of draft marketing material, price quotes and a proposed budget. To strengthen your application you may wish to add full copies of your marketing plans as well as your distribution plans.
Applications are reviewed for completeness and eligibility by the Program Administrators before submission to the Jury. All applications will be subject to a jury evaluation. Decisions will be made based on available funding, and on the selection criteria.
Applicants in default will not have their applications juried.
JURY
The PROFESSIONAL MARKETING FUND Juries are comprised of three to five autonomous jurors drawn from a pool of individuals and representatives of industry organizations with knowledge of marketing and marketing specialists. The Jury uses the selection criteria to make their selections from the eligible submissions received. The Jury’s decisions are final.
All efforts will be made to avoid any conflict of interest with our juries. As well, details of applications will be verified and summarized for the jury by the Program Manager to ensure ease of comparison and to avoid confidential business information (such as the details of projects in development) from being shared. The jury will have the right to request more detailed information to assist them in their assessment of applications.
SELECTION CRITERIA
In reviewing applications, the Jury will apply the following considerations to the selection process, in order of priority:
1. The extent to which the applicant company can demonstrate the value of these marketing activities to their marketing strategies (project and corporate)
2. The potential impact, and suitability, of the marketing activity or material to their intended targets
3. The level of the applicant company’s marketing preparation and target market research
4. The commitment of the Applicant Company to corporate and industry development
Other considerations to be taken into account by the Jury: the applicant has accessed other sources of funding, and the number of applications received from an individual company, and the versatility and potential for re-use of the marketing materials.
REPORTING CRITERIA
Successful applicants will have to April 30th to provide the Program Administrators with copies of the marketing materials or advertisements, copies of photos taken at the promotional event, a one-page written report describing the results of the marketing initiative and a final cost report itemizing the total cost of the project together with supporting invoices and receipts (a final cost report form will be provided). Specific questions to answer in your written report:
• Describe the marketing strategy activities you undertook.
• Did you achieve the goals you described in your proposal?
• What were your specific outcomes?
• Did you encounter any specific challenges and how will you address these in the future?
• What did you learn and what will you do differently in the future?
Applicants with outstanding reports for previous On Screen Manitoba Programs will not receive further contributions until all outstanding requirements are met.
DEFAULT POLICY
Applicants will be found in default if they do not disclose other government support received; satisfactorily meet their reporting requirements; do not carry out the project as proposed or breach a material condition of the contribution agreement. Under ON SCREEN MANITOBA’s default policy ON SCREEN MANITOBA will impose a penalty, cancel its contribution, and/or prohibit an Applicant from accessing the ACCESS programs for a set period.
THE PROJECT EVALUATION
To fulfill the comprehensive evaluation requirements of our government funders we will require all participants in the ACCESS Project to contribute to the project evaluation. Information gathered will remain confidential.

The Board of Directors of the Independent Production Fund (IPF) has approved a new pilot program to fund drama series created for any platform. In recognition of the evolving broadcast environment, the IPF will provide equity financing not only to drama series with a television broadcast licence, but also to scripted drama series that are designed and produced for exploitation on the web.
As the sources of financing for web video without a broadcast licence are very limited, the IPF support is intended to stimulate the growth of new forms of content. This unique contribution to independent producers will help them to explore the potential for high quality, story driven drama with new and innovative narrative forms. As a leading supporter of Canadian drama, the IPF will experiment in partnership with web content developers to determine how good story-telling translates to other platforms. “It will be an exciting learning process for all of us”, stated Charles Ohayon, Chair of the Board of the IPF. “We will help develop best practises to take advantage of the opportunities that the digital platforms provide for new production styles, processes, formats and business models”.
Joining the IPF in this pilot venture is Film Nova Scotia which will provide additional funding targeted for Nova Scotia based creators and producers of web drama. "Film Nova Scotia is excited to partner with the Independent Production Fund on this program to help Producers explore storytelling through new digital platforms", noted Ann Mackenzie, President and CEO.
The IPF is inviting proposals for online drama series at its application deadline of March 31, 2010. Regulations for applicants will be minimal in order to encourage maximum innovation and experimentation. Projects must be webcast on Canadian-owned websites as a “first window” to ensure more Canadian content for Canadian portals. Some of these projects may serve as pilots for traditional television drama, while others may develop their own dedicated online communities and audiences.
The Independent Production Fund was established in 1991 and has invested over $50 M in 229 television drama series and over 300 professional development projects. The IPF works in collaboration with the Cogeco Program Development Fund which will also finance drama series for television in 2010, enabling the IPF to undertake this special pilot program. The IPF is incorporated as a private foundation with charitable status. It operates on interest generated by its $35M endowment, and recoupment from its project investments. An independent Board of Directors representing the industry oversees the operations of the Fund and makes all funding decisions.
Further information and Requests for Proposal Guidelines are available at www.ipf.ca.

CBC, Digital Rights Group and the online film community Filmaka are running a competition to find the next hit TV format. Filmaka members are focusing on ideas for reality or game shows.
Entrants must submit a "visually enhanced" written pitch -- for anything from a classic studio-based show to some sort of reality hybrid. Entries will be judged by DRG and CBC's in-house development team, after which five entrants will win funds to shoot 15-minute pilots and those pilots will be considered by professional television development executives for development.
DRG and CBC are open-minded about the type of show they're looking for. It could be a classic studio based game show (like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire or Deal or No Deal), it could be a primetime entertainment format (Dancing With the Stars), it could be a show which challenges contestants physically or puts them into extreme situations (American Gladiators, Fear Factor) or it could be a reality/game show hybrid (Survivor, Temptation Island). But whatever it is, your idea must be new and unique!
Your pitches must be uploaded to Filmaka by 24:00 on Sunday, January 24th, 2010.
