In this panel, Oscar nominees and award-winning screenwriters, José Rivera (Motorcycle Diaries, On The Road) and Robert Nelson Jacobs (The Shipping News, Chocolat) discusses elements that can make an adaptation work, including the narrative line, the climax, scene sequences, relationships and visual images. What is PAL Winnipeg?
Winnipeggers know and love their reputation as a centre for artistic expression and excellence. There is a large creative community that feeds this dynamism we all thrive within - actors, technicians, dancers, writers, musicians, and filmmakers (to name a few) who enrich our lives every day and keep us on the world stage. Yet, the vast majority of those artists won’t have the means by which to afford housing as they age. PAL (Performing Arts Lodge) Winnipeg is a not for profit, registered charitable organization dedicated to providing affordable housing and support services for older members of our community particularly those individuals in the performing and allied professions.
Background
In 1986, performing artists organized Performing Arts Lodges of Canada (PAL), a national, non-profit, registered charitable organization, to meet the special needs of its people, with particular emphasis on affordable housing for elderly members of the community. In 1993, the organization opened its first Lodge, Pal Place Toronto, with the assistance of the Government of Ontario, providing rent-geared-to-income and controlled market rent accommodation for over 200 arts workers.
PAL Place in Toronto has been inspirational - it has been successful in creating more than building - it has nurtured an atmosphere where a vibrant and contributing community can continue to flourish. Since its construction, other PAL Chapters have formed in Halifax, Stratford, Edmonton and Calgary. PAL Vancouver is broadly supported by both public and private funds and is now an established residence - they completed their beautiful state of the art building in 2006.
Some of the most vulnerable people in our community are those involved with the performing arts. PAL considers these cultural pioneers a priority for PAL residency since the erratic employment and overall low income endemic within the performing arts industry has prevented many from establishing sufficient pensions or retirement funds on which to draw in later years. To address this situation, PAL Winnipeg is working to build a Performing Arts Lodge in our community to provide senior members of the performing arts community with a safe and secure home in an affordable and supportive environment.
PAL is a community
When Global TV produced a documentary series about PAL Place in Toronto called The Limelighters, this was their description of that community: These people breathe the life of the inner, downtown Toronto. The building is filled with performers, writers, dancers, painters, directors, stage crew, managers and arts and entertainment production people from every branch of the industry. These are people who have a refreshing view of aging and apply a playful approach to living. Perhaps this is because of their backgrounds from within an industry that thrives on playfulness and imagination or because of the kinship and camaraderie that has developed within the walls of the lodge.
We are working toward making PAL Winnipeg just such a place. Active, artful ageing in an urban environment.
The Supporting Cast
Support is a big part of PAL’s Vision - a team of volunteers known variously as The Supporting Cast or PAL’s Angels are an integral aspect of the caring environment PAL Lodges provide. PAL Winnipeg has initiated the Supporting Cast Committee who will help establish our own volunteer network to assist residents with a number of practical issues of daily living. PAL Angels make sick visits in hospital and escort residents to their doctor’s appointments or to the theatre. It is through this network of support and care giving that PAL residents can continue living on their own and, for many, to continue working well into old age.
PAL’s motto, Caring For Our Own, is no idle boast but a serious promise to those who have given much to all of us through their dedication to the Performing Arts - the elderly pioneers of Canada's performing arts industry who created the standards of cultural excellence which reflect the country and instill pride for the quality of Canada's artistic products.

For more than 150 years, thousands of Aboriginal children in Canada were sent to Indian Residential Schools. Children were taken from families, communities, and stripped of languages, cultural identities and traditions. They were to become a part of mainstream culture. The government policy failed, and the devastating impacts continue.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada is hosting its first national public gathering in Winnipeg, June 16-19 at The Forks. Throughout those four days there will be opportunities to learn about the history of the schools and share the experiences of former students and their families. There will also be opportunities to reach out, reconnect and reconcile so that as a community, we can move forward with respect.
Survivors will be journeying to Winnipeg to be part of this historic event. Hotel rooms in the city are sold out. If you are in a position to host a residential school survivor during their stay, please contact the Truth and Reconciliation office at 984-5885.
Please, open your heart, open your home. Show a residential school survivor that it is indeed, about respect.
Call 984-5885. Thank you, Meegwetch.

Panel Discussion: The Essentials of being a Filmmaker in Winnipeg
Wed June 23 - 7PM
* Free Admission
Winnipeggers Deco Dawson, Jeffrey Erbach, Danishka Esterhazy, Sean Garrity and Paula Kelly have all built accomplished careers as independent filmmakers, achieving a level of recognition for their work that only a very few in Winnipeg have attained. While any successful career as an independent filmmaker is founded in making ‘good’ films, there are also a lot of experiences – and lessons learned – that can take a filmmaker into the realm of national and international recognition. In this panel discussion that is targeted at aspiring and emerging filmmakers, these five directors will provide insight into the process of evolving from aspiring to be a filmmaker, to becoming one – and then how to sustain this career. Among the topics to be discussed include how to successfully bridge the gap between art and industry, and the role played by the conscious awareness of a unique voice. A screening of a selection of short films by each of the filmmakers will complement the discussion.
Danishka Esterhazy's Black Field will be playing at the Cinematheque these dates:
Fri May 28 – 7 & 9PM
Sat May 29 to Sun May 30 – 7PM
Wed Jun 2 to Sun Jun 6 – 7PM
Wed Jun 9 to thu Jun 10 – 7PM
The WFG is also doing a retrospective on filmmaker Paula Kelly, featuring such films as The Notorious Mrs. Armstrong and Appassionata: The Extraordinary Life & Music of Sonia Eckhardt-Gramatte. Sifting History: The Work of Paula Kelly will be featured at the Cinematheque from June 11 - 12, 2010.
The Winnipeg Film Group acknowledges the generous support of On Screen Manitoba.

This Month’s Topic: Social Media
The tools of social media are multiplying every day: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, FriendFeed, blogging, StumbleUpon, Google Apps… But behind them all is the idea of interacting with others for a variety of purposes in your professional and personal lives.
Liz Hover and Polly Washburn will present an overview and demonstration of some of the current tools for engaging with others in the digital world, and answer your questions. To attempt to tailor this ever-changing topic to meet the needs of their audience, Polly and Liz would like you to put the “interactive” into “media” via a short web survey.
The presenters:
Liz Hover moved to Winnipeg from London seven years ago. She works as digital media manager for the National Screen Institute – a film and television training school. She authors two blogs: Diary of a Web Gal and Hi, I’m Sadie Shih Tzu (nominated for a Canadian Weblog Award). Liz has presented workshops about the social web for the National Screen Institute, On Screen Manitoba, Canadian Women in Communications, the National Film Board and more. She also does web consulting to help develop and improve websites. Her passion is the internet and how to best use it as a communications professional.
Twitter: @lizhover @nsicanada @sadieshihtzu
Polly Washburn moved to Winnipeg from New York over 10 years ago. She is a film and digital media producer, owner of the production and consulting company Positron Media. She provides consulting and training in the areas of production and web marketing. She is currently producing three feature films, a couple of short ones, a collaborative online digital media project, an iPhone app and an augmented reality game. Kelly Hughes Live! High Life
Date: Friday, March 5, 7:00 pm
Location: Aqua Books (274 Garry Street, between Graham and Portage)
Cost: FREE
Host Kelly Hughes interviews High Life star Stephen Eric McIntyre, stunt coordinator Rick Skene and storyboarder Nicholas Burns.
Winnipeg's only live talk show, Kelly Hughes Live! brings you all the trappings you've come to expect from the television talk show: comedy, music and celebrities. The only difference is that you haven't heard of any of my guests, and you'll have to leave your house. So it's not that much like TV after all.
High Life (dir. Gary Yates, 2010) is a comedic heist movie from the flip-side of the 80's consumer dream. It's 1983, and petty-thief Dick gets a surprise visit from his unhinged former cellmate, Bug. When Bug gets Dick fired from his first straight job, Dick devises the perfect plan for some much needed, fast cash. The problem is, his crew is so rife with loathing that just getting to the bank's front door will take a miracle as the plan starts to unravel before Dick's eyes.

Freeze Frame, Winnipeg’s Media Arts Centre and the 14th annual International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages, is pleased to present a NEW ‘Traveling Animation Station’ series.
Supported by Cultural Capital of Canada 2010 and the Winnipeg Arts Council, Freeze Frame will be touring Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba, visiting as many communities as possible during various events, such as Carnivals, Family Fun Days, Children and Youth programs etc.
The Traveling Animation Station is a bilingual, informal and fun hands-on workshop that will be presented free of charge to the public. It is designed to encourage children, teens and adults to explore the world of stop motion animation. Kids of all ages, including the very young, will create characters out of plasticine, paper and other recycled materials. The characters are brought to life through a series of digital photos, that are edited and played back. A selection of the animated shorts will be posted on the Freeze Frame web site.
“The Animation Station is one of our most popular and widely accessible activities. We’re definitely having fun, but we’re also showing children and families how films are made,” says Freeze Frame Executive Director, Anna Fontaine.
The Animation Station is warm-up to the actual annual international film festival. The Festival features films made for young audiences from the world over and lots of opportunity for hands-on workshops under the direction of guest filmmakers. Participants at each Traveling Animation Station location will have the chance to win a Family Pass for the Festival. Held at Portage Place, Globe Cinema and the Cinemathèque from March 4th to the 13th, 2010 Freeze Frame’s Fourteenth Annual International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages is sure to be a highlight for schools and families alike.
