On Screen Manitoba

This two-day workshop begins with a case study and retrospective of Sidney J. Furie’s career and working methods. Using examples from film, this seminar will cover the motivations behind specific aesthetics, camera movement, scene coverage, the relationship between the director and other creative personnel during preproduction and production.

The Crew Course and Travel Fund (CCTF) supports the professional development of crewmembers and industry professionals currently working in Manitoba’s film and television industry. Through the CCTF, Film Training Manitoba will provide financial assistance to cover the costs of attending a workshop or course not available in Manitoba. The workshop or course must take place between April 1, 2013 and January 31, 2014.

FTM is accepting applications to the Career Focus Crew Internship program. The Career Focus Program is an important part of Film Training Manitoba’s overall training strategy. FTM is committed to helping recent graduates in Manitoba gain on-the-job experience and apply the skills acquired through education to the local industry. The program is well known to employers in the industry and has a high impact on the development of entry-level workers. As a result of the Career Focus Program, 75% of past program participants are currently pursuing a career in the industry.

FTM and Red River College have partnered together on the Film Crew Supervisory Certificate, designed to bring HR and supervisory skills training to Manitoba’s film and television industry.

Any piece of music you use in your production—we’re talking score, original songs, jingles, karaoke, ukulele renditions of love songs, car radios, ringtones and singing parrots—is owned by someone.

The main duties of an assistant director are to assist the director, coordinate all production activity, and supervise the cast and crew on production. The AD is considered the key link between the director and the cast and crew, and also the liaison to the production office, providing regular progress reports about the production.

It takes market savvy and story intelligence to develop a screenplay into a dynamic project that will attract talent, financing and audiences. The Essential Questions of Script Development will give participants the tools they need to read analytically and identify a clear path for the development of their script. The goal of this course is to strengthen the story in a way that will satisfy the intended audience.

Filmmaking is a true blend of business and creativity and making a film takes more than just picking up a camera and shooting a scene. More than anything they may encounter on set, one of the most baffling questions facing a filmmaker has more to do with raising funds and how to handle the ensuing tax credit application. This one-day workshop with Colleen Alksnis will aim to answer as many of the questions you already have and the ones you haven’t even thought of yet.

Through regular evaluation of its workshops by participants, and communication with labour organizations and production companies, Film Training Manitoba has determined the following training priorities for 2013-14.

This workshop will introduce participants to the role of a production buyer and how to successfully approach the challenges of sourcing, purchasing, renting, or acquiring items to be used on a production. Participants will be shown the proper techniques and creative buying solutions that make life easier during a production.

This course will familiarize participants with the provincial laws governing traffic control. Flagsperson training deals with understanding of who is responsible for establishing traffic control on a film set, the duties of a flagsperson on set, the dress and proper equipment necessary for proper flagging and the proper techniques for directing traffic.

For this one-day advanced camera workshop, the instructors will take participants through a hands-on technical run-down of 5 current cinematic camera set-ups, including the newly released Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

The announcement was made by Dr. Kellie Leitch, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
