Working closely with the director, sound, camera, wardrobe, and art departments, as well as the actors, the script supervisor/continuity person is in a unique position to observe and support the creation of a film. The script supervisor is the technical safety net for the crew and is responsible for ensuring that the footage delivered to the producers is in keeping with the approved script and contains the necessary elements for a successful edit.

Film Training Manitoba has designed this 2-day course to examine the essential skills, set etiquette, and techniques necessary to work as a script supervisor in the local film industry.

Script Supervision 101
September 11th | 10 am – 4 pm | $50

This is a primer course on continuity suitable for participants at an entry to intermediate level.

This workshop covers the basics that you need before you book your first continuity job or job shadowing experience as a script supervisor. If you've already done script on a feature or short film, this course will fill in any gaps in training you may have. If you've never been on a film set before this workshop will give you the opportunity to see if script supervision is a career path you would like to pursue. If you are a director, actor, producer, or other film technician and would like to know how to work more effectively with your continuity person, you will also find this course useful.

Some of the topics covered include:

· The role and responsibilities of the script supervisor during prep and production
· How to time and break down a script
· Script supervision paperwork
· How to "see" like a continuity person
· The differences of script supervision for features, television, and commercials
· Visual F/X note taking
· Basic editing and directing theory

This workshop was designed to further your knowledge of script supervision and assist you in your professional development as a script supervisor for film and television. Some of the topics covered include:

· The most common technical errors directors make and how script can help them work with different acting styles
· Tips for handling multiple camera shooting

Film Training Manitoba’s Upcoming Workshops - Fall 2010
Our workshops are held in various venues in the downtown area so please visit our website, www.filmtraining.mb.ca, for more information on how to find us, and how to register for these workshops. You can also call us at 989-9669!

Film Training Manitoba is pleased to offer training at a significantly reduced cost to the Manitoba Film industry.

Advanced Audition Techniques with Jackie Lind
Winnipeg Film Group Studio, 304-100 Arthur Street | $80.00

Sept. 10th (Class A & B) | 6 pm -10 am
Sept. 11th (Class A only) | 10 am – 4 pm
Sept. 12th (Class B only) | 10 am – 4 pm

It’s the best audition that books the job, not necessarily the best actor.

Jackie Lind's Advanced Audition Techniques workshop is not your average workshop. As a participant of this workshop you will not only learn valuable acting tips and techniques, you will also learn how to book a job as an actor. According to Lind, having a strong audition is your greatest asset. If a director is able to direct you in an audition, then they will also be able to direct you on set.

Jackie does not pretend to be an acting coach and will not teach you traditional acting techniques. This workshop will help you focus on what you need to do in an audition to improve your chances of being hired. Along with helping actors succeed at auditions and land the roles they deserve, Lind’s teaching method will leave you feeling positive, supported and inspired in both your craft and your life.

Posted: Apr 23, 2010 SUCCESSFUL TRAINING INITIATIVES FROM FILM TRAINING MANITOBA!

In 2009/2010 FTM launched a pilot training initiative with special project funds from Industry Workforce Development (IWD). The Human Resource Training Fund was made possible with this stimulus funding. FTM worked directly with companies to:

· Increase the number of skilled film professionals in Manitoba companies

· Increase the number of workers prepared to take on management roles within the industry

· Increase the number of workers proficient in the use of new technologies

Training activities focused on leadership and management training, training in new technologies, initiatives to address succession planning and workplace essential skills training.

Four companies applied to the program and all were successful in receiving funds through Film Training Manitoba to address their diverse requests. Les Productions Rivard, Buffalo Gal Pictures, PS Prairies and William F. White provided training to over 50 people in the industry with content ranging from script analysis to Red Camera technology. This program epitomizes what FTM stands for - flexible and collaborative training that truly makes a difference in our community.

LMA (Labour Market Agreement) funding was also directed to successful Aboriginal and Francophone crew training initiatives.

Drawing on industry leaders as instructors, training occurred throughout the year to develop Manitoba’s Aboriginal and Francophone workers in the industry. Participants learned through a combination of workshops, mentorship and on-the-job training. Over thirty local industry professionals and crewmembers provided their expertise as either an instructor or mentor to the participants of these LMA training activities.

Some of the highlights include a lighting workshop using Poor Man’s Process, jib training for the camera and grip department, a colour correction workshop for HD and Wilderness First Aid.

LMA stimulus funding will be available for one more year, which is great news for the industry because it means FTM is again able to offer the Human Resource Training Fund for local companies. Application details will be available in May 2010.

Posted: Apr 23, 2010 FILM TRAININING MANITOBA PRESENTS GENERAL CASTING CALL

Various television series and feature films are scheduled to shoot in Winnipeg over the summer months. In partnership with Jim Heber Casting, Film Training Manitoba (FTM) is coordinating this casting call as an opportunity to evaluate local emerging talent with the goal of expanding the pool of professional artists who could potentially be cast in upcoming film and television productions.

We encourage actors of all ages to apply. Priority will be placed with emerging artists who have not previously auditioned with Winnipeg’s Principal Casting Director, Jim Heber. This event is focused toward new artists who are on a professional track, so no previous professional acting experience is required.

Successful applicants will be assigned a character to prepare that reflects their age, gender and type, with corresponding sides and character breakdown from a project that Jim Heber has previously cast. The goal is to replicate a real audition scenario. In addition, participants will receive a document offering professional guidance with suggestions on how to prepare for an audition and what to expect at the audition in advance.

FTM cannot guarantee that all applicants will be selected to audition. Applications will be reviewed to determine eligibility. All applicants will be notified in early June either way. Auditions will be scheduled on various dates in the month of June, 2010, between 10:00am and 7:00pm.

Application Deadline
Tuesday, May 25th, 2010, by noon. *Please note that the FTM office will be closed on Monday, May 24th.

Posted: Apr 16, 2010 INTRO TO FILM CREW COURSE - A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN FTM AND RED RIVER COLLEGE

Another exciting addition to our programs is collaborative effort Intro To Film Crew offered through Red River College.  Local line producer and production manager, Lesley Oswald, instructs the course, offered through the Department of Continuing Education.

Classes first began September 16, 2008, with twelve students completing the course in November 2008. This extremely useful introductory course presents an overview of the key departments, explains the industry workflow, and provides students with a solid foundation to begin work in the industry.

Intro to Film Crew is now offered as a self-directed online course where students sign up on a monthly basis. The course consists of ten online modules plus FTM’s six online courses - Set Etiquette WHMIS, Safety Awareness, Propane Safety, Intro to Paper, and Locations.

FTM was even able to provide training in the development of course materials!  In January of 2010, production company Numan Films completed the video content for ten teaching modules to be used in our online courses. During the course of the project they were able to use FTM’s funding resources to mentor three upcoming crewmembers in the camera department, production department and in post-production.

More collaborative projects in education!  In addition to our partnership with RRC, FTM also collaborates with College Universitaire de St. Boniface to provide these same online courses in French to students in their Media Studies Program. The original six online courses were translated into French in 2009. Recherché-les!

Posted: Apr 16, 2010 FILM TRAINING MANITOBA'S ONLINE COURSES

In August of 2008 FTM proudly launched six online courses. With these courses available 24/7, up and coming crewmembers have the flexibility needed to get the courses they require for membership to the local labour organizations.

Recognizing the need for film training in Manitoba, Industry Workforce Development (IWD) and Western Economic Diversification (WED) contributed funds to develop the this important online curriculum for:

·       Set Etiquette
·       WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
·       Safety Awareness
·       Propane Safety
·       Locations & Flagging
·       Intro to Paper

These online courses have been a great success: from August 1st, 2008 to March 31st, 2010 FTM had 354 online course registrations, with nineteen registrations from people living in rural areas of Manitoba and four registrations from out of province.

In 2009, IWD also funded the online development of the course, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, which brings the total number of FTM online courses currently available to seven. FTM is continually developing our online catalogue. Look for two new courses, Resume Writing and Interview Techniques and Intro to the Production Office to be up and running this the summer.

Posted: Mar 5, 2010 FTM'S UPCOMING TRAINING EVENTS

Film Training Manitoba and ACTRA are pleased to bring you:

Creative Casting: explore how the casting process works!

March 14th |1 pm – 3 pm | FREE for ACTRA members, $5 for non-members
Colin Jackson Studio | Prairie Theatre Exchange | 3rd Floor Portage Place
There will be a Q&A following the panel discussion.

Auditions can be nerve-wracking for even the most experienced actors. They are essentially a job interview, used in the casting process to demonstrate the level and range of a performer's talent. Regardless of the role you are auditioning to fill, you need to be prepared when you arrive to perform. Many new actors have misconceptions about how the casting process works. More often than not, beginning actors are not sure who's involved, who finds the actor to audition, who makes the decisions, and what the steps are throughout this process.

All auditions have requirements, making the casting process complex and selective. Casting directors meet with thousands of actors over the course of a given year. They must determine whether an actor fits the look of a character as well as whether or not that particular actor would be believable in the role they are casting.

This seminar will unlock the mysteries of the casting process in order to discover what the key players involved are looking for, and how you can improve your own audition process as a professional actor.

Moderator:
Ross McMillan – Actor, Less Than Kind, The Stone Angel, and Walk All Over Me

Panelists:
