Posted: Jul 29, 2010 TELEFILM LAUNCHES DIRECTORY OF MENTORS AND SCRIPTWRITING CONSULTANTS

Telefilm Canada is today unveiling its brand-new online directory of mentors and scriptwriting consultants, which includes the names of more than 100 experts, that creators working in Canada’s film industry will be able to access via Telefilm’s website.

“Telefilm Canada is dedicated to supporting all links in the Canadian film industry value chain,” stated Sheila de La Varende, Telefilm Canada’s Director of National and International Business Development. “Canadian filmmakers are bursting with talent, and we are committed to meeting their needs and supporting their growth and development—which, at the end of the line, will result in the creation of high-quality feature films that will appeal to their target audiences. We are very enthusiastic about the potential of the new online directory of mentors and scriptwriting consultants that we’re unveiling today, which enables Telefilm to act as a catalyst for the industry’s success.”

“When I started my career, I was very lucky to benefit from the patient advice I received from such industry professionals as Michael Miner (Anaconda, Robocop), the wonderful writer and film editor,” said Vancouver writer Michael Giampa, who is included in the directory as a scriptwriting consultant. “Having a mentor who can answer your questions and provide encouragement makes all the difference when you’re starting out in the business. I hope that this directory will foster these kinds of relationships and that it becomes a key tool in the development of a mentoring philosophy within Canada’s movie industry, one that will hep nurture Canadian talent.”

The new online directory of mentors and scriptwriting consultants will enable emerging writers and producers to make contact with industry mentors and veterans, offering them the possibility of developing their skills or finding specific expertise for a given project. All the producer-mentors and writers included in the online directory were chosen by Telefilm following a call for candidates issued in May, and all have agreed to makes themselves available to offer professional advice, coaching and know-how, and thereby help foster the development of talent and projects.

The directory will also enable those participating in such programs as Écrire au long, Feature It! or Featuring Aboriginal Stories to seek out a mentor-consultant who will support them for the duration of their project—one of the eligibility criteria of these programs. Others working in the industry seeking expertise in a variety of areas may also approach the consultants listed in the directory; it will be up to the two parties themselves to negotiate the terms of their agreement.

New applications for mentors and consultants will now be accepted on an ongoing basis and the directory will be updated regularly. The online directory of mentors and scriptwriting consultants and the application form for those wishing to be included are now available online.

Telefilm Canada is announcing that Web-Ciné 360, a pilot initiative that aims to encourage the incorporation of online marketing and use of social media tool in distribution business practices for Canadian films well ahead of their release, will henceforth be offered to the English-language market, for the next two years. In order to measure the strategies’ effectiveness, distributors will be invited to make use of recognized online marketing and Web audience analysis tools, and even to use companies with expertise in this area.

“We’ve noticed that Web-Ciné 360 has elicited a lot of interest within the industry in the French-language market,” said Michel Pradier, Telefilm Canada’s Director of Project Financing. “This has hastened the adoption of new interactive tools and their integration into existing distribution strategies. Based on our experience since the launch of the pilot initiative, and following discussions with the industry, we are today extending the initiative to the English-language market. Our aim is to support Canadian producers and distributors in the ongoing improvement of their feature-film promotional and marketing strategies.”

Posted: May 5, 2010 CANADA FEATURE FILM FUND ANNOUNCEMENT

Telefilm has announced that the Low Budget Independent Feature Film Assistance and Alternative Distribution programs – French and English markets, are now reopened. A preliminary review has been completed and the programs will be redesigned for fiscal 2011-2012. In the interim, the programs are now open in order to serve the needs of the industry.

While the guidelines for the Low budget program – English market remain unchanged, the maximum production budget for the Low budget program – French market has been increased from $1.25 million to $1.5 million, in order to align with the practises of the provincial agency SODEC.

The deadline for submitting projects to Telefilm Canada for the French-language market and for English-language projects in Quebec is Tuesday, May 25, 2010. There is no deadline for the English-language market.

Also, Telefilm Canada is now accepting applications to the Alternative Distribution Program for both the English and French markets for fiscal 2010-11 at regional offices across the country. Please note that for Business Development activities and events, Telefilm will only accept applications from clients whose projects were financed in previous years.

The Low Budget Independent Feature Film Assistance Program supports the independent production and post-production/completion of high quality, original and culturally relevant director-driven low budget feature films from both emerging and established filmmakers.

The Alternative Distribution Program plays an important role in supporting and promoting low budget features by providing financing to organizations that use alternative distribution methods to the traditional theatrical distributor-exhibitor model in promoting and releasing Canadian films.

MANITOBA SCREEN-BASED INDUSTRY PRESENCE: Congratulations to OSM Member Eagle Vision who is one of the companies attending the 2010 Cannes Film Market under the Canada Pavilion banner.

Telefilm Canada is pleased to announce strong attendance for Canadian organizations at the 2010 Film Market, taking place May 12 to 21 during the Cannes Festival. Telefilm will operate the Canada Pavilion there, providing visibility for more than 70 companies with film industry decision makers from around the globe, encouraging partnerships and hosting networking events designed to foster business links between Canadian producers and foreign company representatives.

“Telefilm Canada’s initiatives at Cannes are aimed at creating strategic sales, export and coproduction opportunities for Canadians attending the market,” said Sheila de La Varende, Director, National and International Business Development at Telefilm Canada. “Like the Cannes Festival, the Film Market is an annual “must do” event for anyone in film wanting to do business abroad. The fact that so many Canadian companies attend and find benefits there contributes to making our industry more competitive on the world stage,” she concluded.

Telefilm Canada will be holding four networking events that will help Canadian producers and organizations forge alliances with foreign companies during the Film Market, including three that specifically target the United Kingdom, France and Australia.

Posted: Apr 16, 2010 CALL FOR APPLICANTS TO YEAR 3 OF FEATURING ABORIGINAL STORIES PROGRAM

Key elements of the Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program (FASP) have been revised for fiscal 2010-2011 to allow Telefilm to better evaluate and manage the initiative, and to align it more closely with how the Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF) operates.

With this in mind, the following changes have been made to development-stage funding:

* For screenwriters: Funding available at the Getting to Treatment and Getting to First Draft stages has been updated to reflect Writers Guild of Canada 2010 membership fees;

* For producers and production companies: the maximum amount allowable for the combined stages of Getting to Treatment and Getting to First Draft is capped at $30,000. However, FASP maintains its funding for projects at the Getting to Treatment stage:

o Getting to Treatment stage: The funding maximum available for up to 80% of eligible costs is $20,000.
o Getting to First Draft stage: The funding maximum available for up to 80% of eligible costs is $30,000.
o Getting to Second Draft or Subsequent Draft stage: The funding maximum available for up to 80% of eligible costs is $25,000.

The launch date of FASP for 2010-2011 has been moved up to earlier than in previous years. Please note the following dates:

* Launch of FASP Guidelines – April 13, 2010
* Application submission deadline – May 20, 2010
* Project selection – Week of July 5, 2010
* Jump Start to Film Immersion – End of August 2010
* Closing date for returning successful projects of Year-2 – October 25, 2010

The Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program targets feature length film projects at different stages of development. At each stage, participants benefit from a combination of training, professional development and personalized mentorship activities, and also receive a development advance.

FASP aims to broaden the industry’s capacity within Aboriginal communities and enable Aboriginal filmmakers to more easily access the main funding programs of the Canada Feature Film Fund. The Aboriginal People’s Television Network has been a partner of this initiative since its inception in 2009 and is contributing $750,000 over three years.

Posted: Mar 26, 2010 INDUSTRY ADVISORY - EARLY LAUNCH OF FEATURE IT! 2010

Please be advised that some aspects of the

Feature It!

initiative have been adjusted for fiscal 2010-2011 to allow Telefilm to better evaluate and manage the initiative, and to bring it into closer alignment with how the Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF) regular fund operates. Feature It! is funded through the CFFF.

1. Overall timing to be earlier in calendar year

The Feature It! workshop will be held in June 2010 instead of the fall to move it from the busy annual film festival season to the industry’s slower summer period. This scheduling change will increase the potential for organizers to attract outstanding speakers and presenters, and will also afford Telefilm sufficient time in its fiscal year (April 1 to March 31) to review the program’s first three years of operation, consult with stakeholders, and develop a new strategic plan for the next three years (2011-2014).

Launch: March 25, 2010

Application deadline: April 27, 2010

Project selection announcement: During the week of May 24th, 2010

Workshop: During the week of June 20th, 2010 – dates to be confirmed

2. Projects submitted at “Getting to second draft” or “Getting to subsequent draft” stage no longer require directors to be attached

Removing this requirement brings Feature It! into closer alignment with current CFFF development requirements, and makes the initiative accessible to a broader range of potential applicants.

3. Realignments in development-stage funding

* For screenwriters:

Funding available at the Getting to Treatment and Getting to First Draft stages has been updated to reflect Writers Guild of Canada 2010 membership fees.

* For producers and production companies

The following development-phase funding changes bring Feature It! into closer alignment with similar changes being introduced to CFFF for fiscal 2010-2011.

Please note: Contrary to current CFFF regular fund development requirements, Feature It! maintains its funding for projects at the Getting to Treatment stage. However, the maximum amount allowable for the combined stages of Getting to Treatment and Getting to First Draft is capped at $30,000.

o Getting to Treatment stage: The funding maximum available for up to 80% of eligible costs is $20,000.
o Getting to First Draft stage: The funding maximum available for up to 80% of eligible costs is $30,000.
o Getting to Second Draft or Subsequent Draft stage: The funding maximum available for up to 80% of eligible costs is $25,000.

By aligning Feature It! guidelines more closely with those of the CFFF, it is Telefilm’s intention to prepare successful applicants for how development financing in the CFFF regular fund operates. In this way, Feature It! supports participants’ career progressions so, eventually, they meet CFFF regular development fund eligibility requirements. This alignment helps build participant capacity, which is in keeping with Telefilm’s strategic priority of building industry capacity.

4. All applications must now be submitted online via eTelefilm only

All Feature It! applicants must now apply via the on-line services of eTelefilm. Telefilm Canada will no longer accept Feature It! applications by mail. Applicants should submit the Feature It! application form, duly completed and signed, together with the Telefilm Canada standard budget and all required documentation, to Telefilm Canada by the stated deadline.

Applicants who do not have the access code for our eTelefilm services can request one online or by contacting eTelefilm Technical Support between 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (EST) at 1-800-567-0890 extension 3911.

Feature It! and Ecrire au long are part of Telefilm’s Official Languages Activities Program (OLA-ALO). Feature It! seeks to enlarge the pool of Anglophone creators working in Quebec, while Ecrire au long seeks to enlarge the pool of Francophone creators working outside Quebec.

Guidelines for both initiatives can be found at www.telefilm.gc.ca

Posted: Mar 9, 2010 TELEFILM CANADA WELCOMES CAROLLE BRABANT AS ITS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Telefilm Canada’s Board of Directors is pleased to welcome Carolle Brabant as the organization’s new Executive Director, as announced earlier today by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage. Carolle, who is currently Telefilm’s Director of Administration and Corporate Services, has worked with the organization for the past 20 years in various capacities and has thus gained solid experience in the industry.

“I am delighted with the appointment of Carolle Brabant, who was interim director for 6 months in 2004, as she is perfectly qualified for this position,” stated Michel Roy, Chair of Telefilm’s Board of Directors.

“Carolle, a chartered accountant and MBA graduate, has always shown extraordinary team spirit,” adds Mr. Roy. “Her role and achievements inside Telefilm Canada as Director of Administration and Corporate Services did not allow her to benefit from much visibility with the industry but it will soon discover her to be forward-looking and a person with vision. Furthermore, I am pleased to see one of Telefilm’s senior managers promoted to this leadership role; this is rewarding for all employees inside the organization. I would also like to emphasize that this is the first time a woman will hold this position on a permanent basis,” he concludes.

“I am honoured that Telefilm’s Board of Directors and Minister Moore have placed their confidence in me,” says Carolle Brabant, Telefilm Canada’s new Executive Director. “I am very proud of the success of our Canadian creators and I plan on investing all of my energy to see them gain more visibility on the national and international stage with Telefilm’s support. During my term, I will call upon the innovative ideas put forward by Telefilm’s employees, our clients and partners in order to help our industry reach its full potential,” she concluded.

Recruitment process

The recruitment process was initiated in the summer of 2009 by Telefilm Canada’s Board of Directors. It retained the services of a recruitment agency and established a selection committee that included representatives from: the Office of the Prime Minister, the Privy Council Office, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Office of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Telefilm Canada.

This committee conducted a rigorous process and analyzed the profiles of close to 70 candidates from across the country. The committee’s objective was to identify a strong, bilingual manager with the leadership skills and innovative spirit required to lead Telefilm through this period of change within Canada’s audiovisual industry. Following this search process, and based on a unanimous decision amongst committee members, two candidates were recommended to the Heritage Canada Minister.

Carolle Brabant’s mandate as Executive Director of Telefilm Canada takes effect on March 15.

Telefilm Canada is currently soliciting applications from Canadian production and distribution companies for MIPTV 2010. MIPTV is a major international market for financing, co-producing, buying and selling entertainment across all platforms. It provides you with more contact in the entertainment content business, more exposure and a wider range of distribution platforms than any other industry event anywhere in the world.

Under the Canada Pavilion umbrella, Telefilm Canada, its partners and sponsor, offer many services at attractive rates. Given that the organizer of MIPTV, Reed Midem, has decided to freeze its rental rates for the 2010 year, we are pleased to announce that the 2009 Canada Pavilion option rates will be kept for 2010.

In 2009, there were 11,500 industry professionals, including 3,800 buyers and 4000 companies from 105 countries. The Canada Pavilion covers a surface area measuring 457 m2 and can accommodate a maximum of 80 companies, making it MIPTV’s largest national pavilion.

NEW IN 2010! The Canada Pavilion offers a special networking activity for companies gathered under its umbrella: Connect with Canada! is part of the official program of MIPTV and available to all market participants.

Posted: Jan 29, 2010 TELEFILM LAUNCHES NEW INITIATIVE TO FOSTER INNOVATIVE DISTRIBUTION STRATEGIES

Online marketing and promotion of Canadian films via social media tools

While taking part in Ciné-Québec -- an annual networking event for Quebec film industry representatives -- Telefilm Canada announced the launch of Web-Ciné 360, a pilot initiative aimed at encouraging the integration of online marketing and the use of social media tools into distribution strategies for Canadian films ahead of the films’ theatrical release. In order to accelerate the industry’s adoption of these new interactive tools intended to strengthen film promotion and marketing, Telefilm will offer financial assistance as well as training to distributors submitting eligible projects. In its pilot phase, the initiative targets French-language feature films.

Distributors can submit their project until April 2, 2010.
For further details regarding eligibility criteria, please visit Telefilm Canada’s website.

“Social media tools and the web have enormous potential when it comes to promoting Canadian films,” stated Michel Pradier, Telefilm Canada’s Director of Project Financing. “Encouraging distributors to make better use of online marketing tool should produce convincing box-office results. Throughout the rollout of this new initiative, we will work closely with industry representatives to help them develop or perfect their knowledge of social media, to help them maximize their projects’ impact.”

“Web-Ciné 360 is a splendid initiative from Telefilm that meets distributors’ need to put in place effective web strategies in support of their films’ release,” said Patrick Roy, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Alliance Vivafilm. “The initiative will allow us to develop strategies earlier in the production cycle, and so achieve better box-office results.”

In its initial stage, Telefilm’s initiative is aimed at distribution companies eligible for the organization’s Marketing Program for French-language Productions, for projects having recently obtained production support. Distributors wishing to benefit from Telefilm support under the Web-Ciné 360 project must include online marketing in their promotional strategy by making use of search engine optimization or web technologies in general; by producing a content-rich website; by creating content for such social media tools as blogs, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube; or by using online advertising. In order to measure the strategies’ efficiency, distributors will be invited to make use of recognized online marketing and web audience analysis tools, and even to use companies with expertise in this area.
