The Winnipeg Film Group is pleased to announce three short films from their distribution catalogue are to be featured in this year’s Short Cuts Canada programme at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, which runs September 9 - 19, 2010.

WFG members Caroline Monnet, Matthew Rankin and Cam Woykin will see their short films premiere at the 35th anniversary of TIFF, arguably one of the most important film festivals in the world.

Warchild, directed by Caroline Monnet and produced by Kevin Lee Burton is part of a trilogy of experimental documentary focusing on students from Northern Manitoba who come to live at a boarding school in Winnipeg for Aboriginal youth. Monnet, who grew up between the Celtic coasts of France and the Algonquin territory of Outaouais, QC and currently lives in Winnipeg just completed a photography residency in Berlin. She premiered her short experimental film, IKWÉ, at the festival in 2009.

A short film collaboration long in the making, Negativipeg, directed by Matthew Rankin and produced by Walter Forsberg, tells the story of Rory Lepine, who shot to Herostratic fame in 1985 when he attacked Winnipeg rock legend Burton Cummings with a beer bottle in a North End 7-Eleven. Rankin, a filmmaker from Winnipeg currently living in Baku, Azerbaijan has previously had two other short films in the festival, 2006’s Où est Maurice?, co-directed with Alek Rzeszowski and 2008’s Cattle Call, co-directed with Mike Maryniuk.

Director and Producer Cam Woykin, originally from Calgary and later Winnipeg, is currently completing his MFA in film production at York University in Toronto. Woykin’s new short film, Open Window, co-produced by Boaz Beeri, intimately depicts the portrait of a family and the rising tension of the unspoken in a single continuous shot.

"Short Cuts Canada highlights the best of new Canadian short film each year, and we're thrilled that we have films from Manitoban filmmakers that represent their diversity, creativity and passion so vividly in their work. We're looking forward to welcoming Matthew Rankin and Caroline Monnet back to the festival with world premieres of their newest films, as well as introducing audiences to Cam Woykin with his first appearance at the festival," says Alex Rogalski, Programmer for Short Cuts Canada.

All three filmmakers will be present in Toronto to see their films premiere at the largest festival in Canada, which will screen only 40 short films in the Short Cuts Canada programme this year.

Also featured this year as part of the Essential Cinema exhibition, the inaugural exhibition at TIFF”s Bell Lightbox, will be Hauntings I and II, eleven new silent short film installations by Winnipeg Film Group honourary lifetime member Guy Maddin. “Hauntings I involves eleven projections of reclaimed fragments of cinema’s lost history. Shot in Winnipeg earlier this year with Fassbinder legend Udo Kier, Louis Negin and Tattiawna Jones hired to star, the fragments range from lost avant-garde projects by Hollis Frampton (left on a subway) and Michael Snow to lush dramas from F.W. Murnau and Oscar Michaux. Hauntings II is an original work based on outtakes and inspirational moments from the making of Hauntings I.

After eight years without a date, golf course owner Kevin just wants to meet the right woman. He drops “subtle” hints, like leaving neatly wrapped luxury watches on their desks after knowing them only briefly, but that just seems to scare them away. Because he's already been divorced once, Kevin's overly concerned mother is worried that her chances of being a grandmother may be dwindling. Then along comes Hayaam. Beautiful, funny and smart, she seems perfect. But Kevin must overcome his other major problem: a certain over-eagerness in the bedroom.

A dynamic cast brings writer and director Bruce Sweeney's characters to full realization. Cronin gives a pained and comic performance worthy of Woody Allen, and Sadiq provides the perfect level of sultry angst as Hayaam. Rose delivers her usual zeal to the role of the overbearing mother, bringing both humour and sadness to her blustery character. Funny and sexy, Excited inverts the romantic comedy, making a movie that is more about what keeps people apart than what brings them together.

In 2004, 13 Indigenous Grandmothers from all four corners, moved by their concern for our planet, came together at a historic gathering, where they decided to form an alliance: The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers. This is their story. Four years in-the-making and shot on location in the Amazon rainforest, the mountains of Mexico, North America, and at a private meeting with the Dalai Lama in India, For the Next 7 Generations follows what happens when these wise women unite. Facing a world in crisis, they share with us their visions of healing and a call for change now, before it's too late. This film documents their unparalleled journey and timely perspectives on a timeless wisdom.

The film is presented in solidarity with the first community event of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, June 16 to 19 in Winnipeg, near The Forks. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission is mandated to create a complete historical record and to collect individual statements about residential school experiences and impacts.

BLACK FIELD

DIR DANISHKA ESTERHAZY | 2009 | CANADA | 80 MINS. |

Starring Sara Canning, Mathiew Bourget, Ferron Guerreiro, Darcy Fehr

Inspired by the gothic novels of the Bronte sisters,(Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights) Danishka Esterhazy’s captivating first feature is a suspenseful drama unfolding on a Canadian prairie landscape in the 19th century. One of the best local features in some time this beautifully photographed film is the story of Maggie McGregor (played by Sara Canning of The Vampire Diaries) and her sister Rose who have no remaining family to help with the harsh physical labour needed to run their farm. The two sisters lives are forever changed when a mysterious and charming man named David Latouche arrives at their isolated farm. As the mesmerizing French Canadian trapper wins the sisters over, sparks start to fly. Black Field is a story about love and lust, truth and desperation.

“Black Field is filled with beautiful visuals that immerse viewers in the 1800’s prairie setting. Evenings are barely lit with candles, casting the farm in shadows.” Vancouver Film Festival

“ A gothic love letter to the prairies…Esterhazy’s tale of romance and betrayal is a striking period piece.” Uptown

Danishka Esterhazy is a graduate of the Director’s Lab at the Canadian Film Centre (founded by Norman Jewison) and has written and directed several short films which have screened at film festivals around the world. She was the 2008 winner of the Kodak New Vision Award sponsored by women in Film and Television in Toronto. She is currently developing a new sci fi feature Level 16.

ME AND ORSON WELLES

Dir. Richard Linklater | 2009 | USA | 109 MIN. |

Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles is one of the best movies about theatre I’ve ever seen. The film involves the Mercury’s (the company of Orson Welles) first production, a Julius Caeser set in Mussolini’s Italy. It sees this enterprise through the eyes of Richard Samuels (Zac Ephron) a young actor who is hired as a mascot by Orson Welles, and somehow rises to a speaking role. He is star struck and yet self possessed and emboldened by a sudden romance that overtakes him with a Mercury cohort Sonja Jones (Clare Danes) The film is steeped in theatre lore. The impossible hours, the rehearsals, the gossip, the intrigue, the hazards of stage trap doors, the quirks of personalities, the egos…

THE ROOM
DIR. TOMMY WISEAU | 2003 | USA | 99 MIN.
Starring Tommy Wiseau, Juliette Danielle, Greg Sestero

First released in 2003, The Room is overtaking The Rocky Horror Picture Show as a camp masterpiece and Ed Wood’s Plan Nine from Outer Space as possibly the worst movie ever made. Made for over $7 million, and independently financed, word of mouth about this film is spreading like wildfire. It has been described by one critic as being “compelled by madness so strong that it leaks into the real world” and has earned the acknowledgement that “cinematic travesties this complete only happen once in a generation.” Is this film worthy of its increasing recognition as a cult classic? You decide.

ART & COPY | Dir. Doug Pray | 2009 | USA | 89 mins.

This powerful new film about advertising and inspiration, Art & Copy by Doug Pray, ( director of Surfwise, Scratch, Hype!), reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creative’s of our time. These people have profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding from advertising's "creative revolution" of the 1960's, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation, featuring brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce and human emotion.

The screening of this film has been generously sponsored by Tactica.

Neil Young's Trunk Show | Dir. Jonathan Demme | USA | 2009 | 120 mins

Neil Young's Trunk Show is a travelling display of unique goods, packed and unpacked along the way. In this documentary, Jonathan Demme (Rachel Getting Married, Philadelphia) explores Neil Young's musical and spiritual soul. We see Young, on a stage full of long-time touring bandmates: Ben Keith, Ralph Molina, Rick Rosas, Pegi Young and Anthony "Sweet Pea" Crawford, and an onstage painter portrayed by Eric Johnson. There are delicately offered acoustic numbers like Sad Movies and Mexico; mesmerising electric travelogues into the artist's psyche (No Hidden Path); searing, chaotic anthems including Like a Hurricane and Cinnamon Girl; and rarely performed pieces like Kansas and Ambulance Blues that provide glimpses of Young's less public persona. Shot with a mix of video and film cameras (HDCam, HDV, Super 8mm), mostly handheld, Neil Young's Trunk Show presents the kinetic reality of a Neil Young performance in a breathtakingly intimate fashion. Young and his band are captured with great immediacy, and the film is dominated by his love of unvarnished hard rock with plenty of his trademark noisy guitar solos.

The screening of Neil Young Trunk Show has been generously sponsored by Long & McQuade Musical Instruments.

Part of the Official Selection of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, this documentary is about the great French director Henri-Georges Clouzot and the innovative film that almost killed him. Clouzot's reputation is founded on the works The Wages of Fear (1953) and Les Diabolique (1955) and it might have been enhanced if he had completed his last project, L'Enfer (Inferno), in 1964 about a jealous husband driven towards insanity. This film explains what went wrong - the director, having alienated cast and crew with his obsessive behaviour and then suffered a heart-attack - and unearths vast amounts of footage and experiments in kinetic art that show how very remarkable the film might have been if completed. LA BELLE VISITE (JOURNEY’S END) * FREE ADMISSION

Dir. Jean Francois Caissy | Canada | 2009 | 80 mins – French w / English subtitles
Introduction and Q&A with director Jean-François Caissy
Introduction et sessions questions/réponses avec le réalisateur Jean-François Caissy

In the far reaches of the Quebec countryside, between a road and a headland that plunges into the sea, an abandoned motel has been converted into a retirement home. In this former travelers’ retreat, time seems to have ground to a halt. La Belle Visite is an elegiac exploration of old age, set in a place at once physical and allegorical. Set against the backdrop of the rolling sea and changing seasons, the film takes us inside this microcosm, slowly revealing the workings of a self-contained world. By sharing in the lives of two dozen seniors over the course of five seasons, the viewer is drawn into the pace of old age; rather than providing answers, the film elicits reflection.

Fri. Mar 19 | 7:00 PM
Sun. Mar 21 | 7:00 PM
Wed. Mar 24 | 7:00 PM
Thu. Mar 25 | 7:00 PM

This film explains what went wrong – the director, having alienated cast and crew with his obsessive behaviour and then suffered a heart-attack – but it also unearths footage of camera tests and experiments in kinetic art and colouration that suggest how very remarkable the film might have been if completed. (French with English Subtitles)

Posted: Feb 5, 2010 SPECIAL SCREENINGS AND EVENTS AT CINEMATHEQUE

In the Shadow of the Company (Curated by Kevin Nikkel)
Fri. Feb 5 to Sun. Feb 7, 2010 | Multiple screenings and events

In the Shadow of the Company is a program of films and events that offers a critical viewing of an integral part of Canadian, Manitoban and Winnipeg history. The stories of the Hudson's Bay are vast, the history is long and the territory is massive. There are also many voices that tell the stories of this place. How do we interpret these histories to make meaning or to make entertainment? How do different filmmakers make sense of the topic in different ways? In the end, the fragmentary views of this history amount to different versions of the Hudson's Bay, from documentary realism to dramatic recreation, mythologizing and satire, or a hybrid of film genres. (Kevin Nikkel)

The Winnipeg Film Group gratefully acknowledges the funding support of The Beaver: Canada's History Magazine, Manitoba Film and Music and Saint Margaret's Anglican Church for sponsoring this series.

Special Full Series Pass: $50 non-members/ $35 members (Available for purchase through our online store).

Bending Genre: Hybrid Documentaries W/ JOHN WALKER
As filmmakers push the boundaries of genre and form, documentary hybrids, features documentaries that borrow and adapt, bend and remake the notion of non-fiction filmmaking have emerged. From Guy Maddin's MY WINNIPEG to John Greyson's FIG TREES, hybrid films are increasingly popular with directors and audiences alike. John Walker's PASSAGE is among this new form. In this master class, Walker will present his views on genre, his approach to working with historical material within both dramatic and documentary structures that resists recreation, and how he broke both fiction and non-fiction ideas apart to create the stunning, innovative and provocative work that is PASSAGE. Walker will review the process of making PASSAGE from its original proposal to the aesthetic choices that resulted in casting actors to present historical facts in a documentary feature, and his unique twist on those facts. He will present clips from the film and comment about scene structure, story editing, pacing and making his approach work in the editing suite.

Background ON John Walker:
A pioneering documentary Canadian cinematographer and filmmaker John Walker launched his career behind the camera in 1970 as a photographer based in Montreal. He began working as a cinematographer for Crawley Films in 1975 and over the years has worked on a superb body of work beginning with his first film, the multiple award-winning Chambers: Tracks and Gestures (about Canadian artist Jack Chambers) produced by Atlantis Films in 1981. The following year, his passionate commitment to the documentary form led him to co-found the Canadian Independent Film Caucus (now the Documentary Organization of Canada), a lobby group for point-of-view documentaries. Walker has credits on more than sixty films as producer, director or cinematographer many which have received international acclaim and have been widely broadcast and screened at many of the world’s major film festivals. Walker’s numerous international honours include a Genie Award for Best Feature Length Documentary (Strand: Under the Dark Cloth, 1990). He has also earned five Gemini Awards and his most recent film Passage has been released to wide acclaim. (Film Reference Library)

PASSAGE ( BLU RAY PREMIERE )
Dir. John Walker | 2009 | 108 min. | Canada
Sat./ Feb. 6 / 7:00 PM
THE CINEMATHEQUE, 100 ARTHUR STREET

INTRODUCED BY JOHN WALKER
It was news that shook the English-speaking world. Celebrated British explorer Sir John Franklin and his crew of 128 men had perished in the Arctic ice during an ill-fated attempt to discover the Northwest Passage. More shocking, they had descended into madness and cannibalism. A Scottish doctor John Rae, had discovered what six years of searching by British, Americans, French, and Russian had failed to do. With PASSAGE, filmmaker John Walker employs an innovative approach to structuring the incredible multilayered story of John Rae and brings it to vibrant life using a unique blend of dramatic action, and behind-the-scenes documentary footage. PASSAGE is a story of incredible sacrifice, stunning distortion of the truth and single-minded obsession. It challenges the way we look at history.

”Provocative… no one who has any knowledge or feelings about either Franklin or Rae should miss seeing it.” Russell Potter

“Nothing in this daring film is straightforward. As much as it chronicles Rae's journey across the Arctic, Passage also traces a journey across time, an encounter with the Victorian world that will mesmerize viewers." (Michael Robinson, Humanities Department, University of Hartford)

One of Canada's most imaginative independent filmmakers, Sean Garrity (director of Inertia, Winner Best Canadian Film / Toronto Film Festival 2001 and Lucid, Winner CITY TV award / Vancouver International Film Festival) has created a controversial new feature which will split audiences everywhere.

Adam and Zooey have been trying to have a baby for several months, only to end up pregnant after a rape. Unsure of the patronage of their child, they decide to have the baby anyway. Haunting and emotionally devastating, some festivals have refused to screen the film on the grounds that it is too contentious, yet it has sparked an incredible debate everywhere it has played. You decide.
