City of Winnipeg Archives Artist-in-Residence: Theatrical Film Premiere
Paula Kelly’s trio of short films entitled Souvenirs will be premiered to the public on Friday, September 19, 7 pm at Cinematheque, 100 Arthur Street.
Paula Kelly was selected as Artist-in-Residence at the City of Winnipeg Archives through the Winnipeg Art Council’s Public Art Program. Paula spent six months at the Archives, sifting through the rich collections, engaging with the public and adding to the archival record with new film and sound recordings to create three films that are constructed as dialogues between the archival record of the City of Winnipeg and the selected memories of citizens who have lived, worked, suffered and celebrated here.
Sand and Stone (5 min.) digs up the history of hard labour and the urban landscape—the workers who sweated its surfaces and shapes, and the primary materials they used to construct a city. Watermarks (10 min.) travels the emotional currents evoked by the experience of flooding in the lives of city dwellers, and looks for the imprints left behind after the waters recede. Waiting for the Parade (7 min.) transforms the 75th anniversary celebration of Winnipeg in 1948 into a discourse on the city's shifting identities through decades of progress and regress, cynicism and hope.

Further to the open letter that NSI, CFC and L’INIS sent last week to Minister Josée Verner, we're asking all friends of NSI to send a copy of this same letter to their individual Member of Parliament and to help in other ways as well.
We’re working to get our message out nationally that training by the national schools greatly benefits Canadian writers, directors and producers; directly grows the film, television and digital media sectors; and contributes to the economy and cultural landscape at large. But we need your help to lobby regionally.

Actors Needed for Successful Museum Program
The Manitoba Museum will be holding an open call for actors on Saturday, September 13th from 11am until 5pm.
Halloween Funkadelic is an extremely popular, sold-out annual event that will be held on Friday, October 24th. Talented actors with a gift for improvisation and working with a live audience are needed for the event’s ghost tour, which will be styled as a trip back to the time of Jack the Ripper.
Actors will be expected to attend rehearsals on the evenings of October 7th, 20th, and 23rd, unless other arrangements are made. October 23rd is a full dress rehearsal, and attendance of all actors is required.
All those interested should report to Museum reception on Saturday, September 13th with a headshot, if possible, and a CV detailing their previous acting experience. Auditions will be videotaped.
These roles include an honorarium, free food and non-alcoholic drinks during breaks at the actual event, and entrance to Halloween Funkadelic. We also provide passes to the Museum galleries, planetarium, and Science Gallery.

CSIF 17th Annual $100 film festival
SELECTION PROCESS
The Festival Programming Committee selects films for exhibition at the Festival from submitted entries, and a separate jury of artists and professionals from the film community selects award recipients. Entries are judged on their creative content, but also on the ability to maintain the spirit of low-budget filmmaking.
The $100 Film Festival pays artist fees for all works selected for the festival. If your film is selected for exhibition, you will be asked to ship A FILM PRINT to the CSIF approximately one month before the Festival. The $100 Film Festival will make every attempt to avoid any damage to your film, but cannot provide any guarantee. At the completion of the Festival, your film will be shipped back to you, pre-paid (with the exception of filmmakers in Calgary whose films will be available for pick-up).

WCMA Responds to Recent Cuts to Cultural Programs
(AUGUST 15 - Winnipeg) - The Western Canadian Music Alliance feels that the Federal Government’s decision to cut the ProMart (arts promotion) program administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), and the Trade Routes Program run by the Department of Canadian Heritage is a mistake and an attack on a vibrant and economically viable segment of the Canadian economy.
The Canadian music industry has an international reputation as producers of some of the finest artists in the world.
The Western Canadian Music Alliance intends to work with music-based organizations across the country to engage the government to reconsider their position on the cancellation of the Trade Routes and ProMart initiatives. The past has taught us that if you dismantle the cultural railroad it may become impossible to rebuild.

Video Pool Media Arts Centre presents Robert Hengeveld's "Staging the Gap"""
Winnipeg, MB (July 10, 2008) – Video Pool Media Arts Centre is very pleased to present Staging the Gap, a provocative media installation by Toronto-based artist, Robert Hengeveld.
Staging the Gap is a miniature model of a concert stage with silently animated lights and smoke. The work explores the relationship of fact and fiction in a technologically mediated world. Hengeveld critically reflects on the mechanisms used to deliver popular culture by focusing on how visual effects – stage lights, pyrotechnics, and dry ice – are used at concerts to shape our understanding of what we hear. Ignoring society’s desire for the spectacle of performance, the stage created by the artist remains empty while a precisely orchestrated light show plays out.
This exhibition runs from July 29 – August 21, 2008 and will be available Tuesday – Friday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Winnipeg Square (360 Main Street, below Portage and Main, Concourse level, Unit 3).
Exhibition Launch: July 25 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Artist talk begins at 6:00 p.m. in Video Pool's Studio (100 Arthur Street, 3rd Floor); Reception will follow.

Big Daddy Tazz to perform 8 hours continuous stand-up comedy
March 24, 2008 (Winnipeg) - Foolish? Maybe he is, but on April 1st, 2008, Winnipeg’s own Big Daddy Tazz will take to the stage at the Gas Station Theatre and attempt to break the endurance record for a continuous stand-up comedy performance.
Last April, Dane Cook set a record with an act lasting 3 hours and 50 minutes, breaking a mark set by Richard Pryor in 1980 of 2 hours and 41 minutes. Dave Chappelle broke Cook’s record that same month, then broke his own record again in December, performing for 6 hours and 12 minutes. Cook retaliated on January 3rd, 2008, performing for 7 hours.
On April Fool’s Day, Big Daddy Tazz plans to beat Cook’s latest record by aiming for a performance of 8 hours. In preparation, Tazz is currently undergoing an intense training program of zingers, quips, puns, and a strict diet of witty comebacks and one-liners. He plans to keep his game clean of performance enhancing tricks such as knock-knock jokes and riddles.

The CFTPA Launches ISAN Canada
What is ISAN?
The International Standard Audio-visual Number (ISAN) is a voluntary numbering system for the identification of audio-visual content, including films, television, advertising, Internet content and games. An ISAN is a centrally registered and permanently assigned reference number used to uniquely distinguish one audiovisual work, or version of a work, from all others. It is managed by the ISAN International Agency, ISAN-IA, based in Geneva.
The number, which was approved as ISO 15706 for works in 2002, and ISO 15706 – 2 for versions of works in 2007, references a metadata set including title, director, type and length of work, and several other data elements related to the work. The number is intended to be read by humans and processed by information systems. It can be embedded in the digital version of a production, printed on labels, and affixed as a 2-dimensional barcode, as well of course as being simply used as an identification number in contracts, catalogues, TV listings and so on.

URGENT: Response to Bill C-10
Dear Members,
No doubt you've been reading with horror news of proposed legislation (Bill C-10) which would have devastating effects on the financing of Canadian film and television and on artistic freedom.
Your immediate action is needed. This bill is in 3rd reading at the Senate but there is hope it can be amended.
A provision in Bill C-10's would allow policy makers to deny CAVCO certification to any production that is found to be "contrary to public policy"" thus denying them federal tax credits after the production is complete. This has been declared 'hidden censorship' and would result in artists self-censoring themselves. How 'contrary to public policy' will be defined

B.C. Tax Breaks to Match Ontario
From Playback Magazine:
B.C. Tax Breaks to Match Ontario
by: Sean Davidson Jan 25, 2008
British Columbia is bringing its tax credits in line with Ontario's, and plans to offer breaks of 35% for at-home productions and 18% for the rest until 2010.
The new tax credits, unveiled Friday by provincial Finance Minister Carole Taylor, match those introduced earlier this month by Ontario. Both centers have seen film and TV work dwindle since last year, in part because of the buoyant loonie. More recently, the WGA strike has also taken a significant bite out of the usually busy TV sector in B.C.
The new tax breaks will apply to productions that were underway by Dec. 31, 2007.
