The annual MIPDOC Co-Production Challenge, co-presented by Reed MIDEM and realscreen, has opened its call for entries. The Challenge will be part of this year's MIPTV conference, held in Cannes from April 7-11. As with past years, producers of selected projects will have the opportunity to pitch their programs before a panel of top international commissioning editors.

The OSM office will be closed on December 24th and reopen January 3.

Winnipeg filmmaker Matthew Rankin's Negativipeg is among a group of Canadian films that will be going to the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) today announced its Program Guidelines for the upcoming fiscal year starting April 1, 2011. It also announced the Factor Weights that will be used to calculate Performance Envelopes for 2011-2012. These announcements reflect decisions made by the CMF’s Board of Directors at its meeting held on November 25, 2010.

“The changes announced today reflect much of what we heard during the extensive consultations undertaken this fall by the CMF”, stated Valerie Creighton, President and CEO. “We once again wish to thank our stakeholders for their time, advice and valued contributions."

The Board of Directors of the Independent Production Fund undertook an evaluation of its Web Series Pilot Program and determined that funding support should be maintained in 2011, in order to continue to explore this innovative, story-driven dramatic form and its potential business models. “The creativity of the web series format is exciting and inspiring, but there are a few mysteries yet to solve in this experimental format” noted IPF Chair, Charles Ohayon, “Time is needed to develop appropriate marketing, distribution and business models”.

There has been very strong industry interest in this unique funding Program and much anticipation for its renewal. The IPF is the only Canadian Fund that supports linear online dramatic content. The 2010 Pilot Program invested $1.2 M in the production of 11 drama series in English and in French, created for audiences from pre-schoolers to adults, representing 942 minutes of linear drama as well as interactive activities and social media strategies. Budgets ranged from $300 a minute to $5,000 a minute. The funded projects were selected from amongst 166 submissions made by Canadian producers and writers from across the country. The IPF created its own web series dashboard for the series it funds, Wip, available at www.ipf.ca/webseries.

The Shaw Media Internships for Students with Permanent Physical Disabilities are a series of internships designed to encourage and aid Canadian talent in establishing or furthering a career in the Canadian broadcast industry. These annual internships reflect Shaw Media’s commitment to the diversity of talent and perspectives that comprise our ever-changing Canadian culture.

The Empowered Audition is an ongoing program for professional and emerging professional actors in the Manitoba film and television industry. The goal of this workshop is to empower the actor through regular commitment to the craft of acting in an intensive environment. These one-day workshops, spread throughout the year, will challenge the actor to maintain their audition confidence through the exploration of acting techniques specific to preparing for the audition and delivering excellent, nerve-free acting in the audition room.

To better assist new talent and low-budget productions, the funding awarded through this program will now be in the form of a grant, and will no longer take the form of an equity investment. A micro-budget production stream has also been implemented as a part of this program for factual and scripted projects with budgets of less than $100,000. Full details can be found in the Grant Program for Emerging Talent and Micro-Budget Production guidelines, which are now available on the Manitoba Film & Music website.

National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is a national not-for-profit charitable educational institution headquartered in Winnipeg. It provides training for writers, producers, and directors working in film, television and digital media.

The Buffalo Gal Pictures produced Less Than Kind has added a new cast member in a recurring role for its third season, which is currently in production.

The Canada Media Fund received nearly 200 funding applications for digital media and interactive software application projects in its Experimental Stream program. The funding applications requested about $72 M against an available budget of $10.8 M. Of the applications received from around the country, 45.6 % were for the development phase, 7.7 % for marketing, and 46.7 % for production. The second round application submission deadline was November 12, 2010. It was the second and final deadline for the submission of Experimental Stream project applications.

On Screen Manitoba member Caroline Monnet is a multidisciplinary artist in residence at OBORO in Montréal. During her residency, she produced Amik(waa), a multimedia installation investigating the connections between the scientific knowledge of her Algonquin ancestry—the Beaver Clan—and the natural world. Monnet will present her installation on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Manitoba Eco-Network’s Reel Green Film Festival are currently looking for volunteers for their festival on February 4th and 5th. This is Winnipeg’s only festival dedicated to environmental issues and solutions.

Winnipeg director Adam Smoluk's latest film, Foodland, produced by On Screen Manitoba member Juliette Hagopian, will have it's world premiere on December 9 at Portage Place IMAX Cinema. Smoluk and the film were recently profiled in The Lance newspaper.

The Gimli Film Festival is currently accepting submissions for it's 2011 festival. Submissions may be fiction, documentary, animation or experimental. A short film must be less then 60 minutes long. Films must be completed after January 1, 2009.

In order to stimulate the production of digital content intended for new distribution platforms, TV5 Québec Canada is launching, for the second consecutive year, the Fonds TV5 pour la création numérique (TV5 Fund for Digital Creation). The TV5 Fund disburses a budget envelope of $120,000 in cash (direct financial support for production) and $100,000 in services, marketing and promotion, for combined support totalling $220,000 for the year 2011.

For all the talk of how much money the modern video game business makes or how creative the games themselves are, there's still not a lot of visibility for the folks who actually craft the experiences. Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky of BlinkWorks Media want to change that with Indie Game: The Movie. They've been rolling out digital shorts spun out from the work-in-progress on the film's website and are currently looking for distribution partners. Swirsky and Pajot took took some time between shoots to answer a few questions about the production.

WRITERS' SERIES: WRITING THE SHORT SCREENPLAY

Explore story structure in relation to the short film screenplay. In class participants will examine the elements that make a successful short film. They will also explore film festival expectations for short films. This class is suitable for any level. For the second class, students will write a new short screenplay, or revise an existing short screenplay.

The next session of The Empowered Audition workshop series will feature special guest Brendon Sawatzky (Dec. 11th). With producers serving an integral role in the casting process, here’s a chance for workshop participants to audition and receive direct feedback from one of the local industry’s high-profile producers.

Tom Perlmutter, head of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), hosted a conversation with the people of Winnipeg on Thursday, November 25 at McNally Robinson Booksellers Grant Park.

The public meeting was an opportunity for the NFB commissioner to hear about the stories that matter most to Winnipeggers. He also shared information about the new directions the NFB is taking and let people know about all the ways they can now access NFB productions.

On Screen Manitoba member Buffalo Gal Pictures co-produced Amreeka was chosen to be among the Sundance Institute's inaugural Film Forward slate of films. The first Film Forward slate includes five American and five international films which will be presented in collaboration with public and private partners. These films and their filmmakers will kick off the ambitious project in New York and Tunisia in December.
 

Telefilm Canada is issuing today updated guidelines for the certification of International Coproduction. These guidelines will provide Canadian producers with the necessary information regarding the requirements and procedures to be followed when applying for an international coproduction certification.

CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival's Edumacation, produced by On Screen Manitoba member Frantic Films, was broadcast on November 30.

Last Comic Standing finalist Gerry Dee hosts this rip-roaring retrospective – a one-hour television special that also features the hilarious stand-up of Nikki Payne, Jon Dore, Steve Brinder, Dave Hemstad, Karen O'Keefe, Dylan Mandlsohn and John Wing.

In keeping with Telefilm Canada’s objectives regarding professional development, Telefilm is committed to helping the industry prepare for the transition to a digital universe. It will be offering training workshops to give directors, producers and distributors a greater understanding of multiplatform content marketing and distribution so that they may profit from the new possibilities it creates.

This workshop is aimed at developing marketing knowledge and an understanding of the issues related to distributing feature films in the multiplatform age. It will focus on the possibilities offered by online marketing and social networks, digital content creation and distribution strategies and the multiplatform approach.

The early bird deadline for the Yorkton Film Festival will close December 15th, 2011. Until this date, filmmakers wishing to enter their work into the Yorkton Film Festival can do so with only a $75.00 entry fee per entry. On December 15th, the entry fee for the Yorkton Film Festival will jump to $85.00 per entry. All submissions will be accepted until the deadline of January 31, 2011 at which time the adjudication process will begin. Filmmakers entering in the Student Production category can enter their films at any time before the final January deadline for a $40.00 entry fee.

In the impoverished and extremely isolated region of Northern Argentina known as "El Impenetrable,", the children of a detached elementary school eagerly await a visit from their "Godmothers," a charity mission from the city of Buenos Aires. When they arrive, life in the hamlet of Los Pereyra changes completely. The CMPA’s Prime Time in Ottawa 2011 conference is an exciting and thought-provoking must-attend national event. For three action-packed-days producers, industry leaders, funders and policy makers unite under one tent to better understand and debate where the Canadian content production sector is headed and where it should be going.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) is holding the first armchair discussion in its Insights on Privacy Speakers’ Series. Filmmakers looking to have their say on copyright also have the chance to win some cash while they’re at it, as the CFC launches the next edition of its Reel Challenge Contest.

The Writers’ Collective of Manitoba is offering a Beginners Course in Scriptwriting with On Screen Manitoba member writer/director Danishka Esterhazy on Saturday, December 4th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino announced funding of $250,000 to support Prairie Scene, a two-week festival in the nation's capital that will showcase Manitoba artists from April 26 to May 7, 2011.

"There are many talented artists located throughout Manitoba and I am certain the group chosen to represent Manitoba at the festival will do the province proud," said Marcelino. "Support for Prairie Scene reflects ourgovernment's ongoing commitment to the many artists living in Manitoba and our desire to provide opportunities for them."

Located in the heart of the entertainment industry, the LA Mobile Entertainment Summit, in association with Variety, will attract the brightest minds in the mobile ecosystem. Delivering two days of packed in-depth discussions, the summit will deliver strategies to capitalize on this rapidly changing landscape.

The Canadian Film Centre's Cineplex Entertainment Film Program is a five-and-a-half month complete immersion in the art and business of dramatic filmmaking for directors, producers, writers and editors. Filmmakers develop their technical, collaborative and business skills, while developing project slates and refining their artistic expression in an intensely demanding, creative and professional environment.

The board of directors of the Gimli Film Festival is pleased to announce Cheryl Ashton has been appointed festival director of Manitoba’s largest film festival.

Ashton is a familiar face in the Winnipeg arts and culture scene. She was executive director of the National Screen Institute from 1998 to 2002, where she spearheaded NSI’s move from its headquarters in Edmonton to Winnipeg, rebranded the organization and introduced the Film Exchange. Previous to that, she was executive director of MMPIA (now called On Screen Manitoba), where she managed the creation of Film Training Manitoba. From 1992 to 1993, she was executive director of Folklorama.

During its last financial year the CTF disbursed a record amount of $327 million to help produce 4,400 hours of programming, including 932 hours of new broadcast programs. Flashpoint, The Young Romantic, Les Invincibles, and Les hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin are only a few examples of programs that received numerous awards, attracting many repeat viewers as indicated by audience rating numbers.

Only a few weeks after Buffalo Gal Pictures merged with Tina Keeper’s Keeper Productions to form Kistikan Pictures, the new company has scored a $20,000 licence fee.

Tom Perlmutter, head of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), will host a conversation with the people of Winnipeg on Thursday, November 25, 5:00 p.m. at McNally Robinson Booksellers Grant Park. All are welcome!

The public meeting is an opportunity for the NFB commissioner to hear about the stories that matter most to Winnipeggers. He will also share information about the new directions the NFB is taking and let people know about all the ways they can now access NFB productions.

The visit to Winnipeg follows on the heels of Alicia Smith’s appointment as NFB Prairie Centre producer. Smith is responsible for producing interactive, documentary and animation projects with directors, producers and digital-media makers in Manitoba. Earlier this year, the NFB also named Winnipeg-based filmmaker Cordell Barker as animation advisor for the Prairie and North West Centres.

Submissions are now open for So You Think You Can Pitch, the highly anticipated annual live pitch competition at the Realscreen Summit. Based on a popular game show format, this year’s session will once again offer five brave producers the chance to pitch their project live to a panel of industry judges.

The first trailer for On Screen Manitoba member Shelagh Carter's first feature film Hello, Darling is now online. The film, which is produced by OSM member Polly Washburn, tells the story of a young girl helping her family come to terms with her mother's mental illness.

Congratulations to On Screen Manitoba member Jeremy Torrie for winning Best Director for his film A Flesh Offering at the 35th Annual American Indian Film Festival on November 13 in San Francisco. The film is about a group of young friends that head north for a weekend of snowboards and partying but fall prey to the incarnation of a Native legend that pits the forces of good against evil.

Congratulations to Buffalo Gal Pictures / Breakthrough Entertainment's Less Than Kind that won three Gemini Awards at a ceremony on November 13. Fresh from sweeping the TV category at last month’s Canadian Comedy Awards, Less Than Kind took home the honors for best writing in a comedy or variety program or series (Marvin Kaye and Chris Sheasgreen) early on in the evening.

As outlined in an email on September 9, 2010, the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office (CAVCO) has introduced a new procedure for producers and key creative personnel to demonstrate Canadian citizenship or permanent residency for the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit (CPTC) program.

The CMF wants to hear from you. After an extended road trip that saw representatives from the Canada Media Fund hold 23 explanatory sessions across the country, the Fund has set up a discussion forum that will allow interested parties to offer their feedback.

When is reality TV not a documentary, and when is a Canadian TV award show in the national interest? These and other questions that help define Canadian broadcast license mandates and their logging requirements were answered in part this week as the CRTC revised and updated its TV program categories.

The Sondra Kelly Award will provide $5,000 to a female screenwriter in mid-career for research/development on a self-initiated project. To be eligible for the award, the candidate must be a female screenwriter in mid-career, with several produced writing credits, and a WGC member in good standing.

The National Film Board of Canada announced today the appointment of Alicia Smith to the position of Prairie Centre producer. In her new role, beginning November 1, Alicia Smith will be responsible for producing interactive, documentary and animation projects with directors, producers and digital-media makers in Manitoba.

It's been almost a year since New Media Manitoba opened up Manitoba's only Apple Authorized training centre. Since late last year, almost 100 individuals have taken Apple and Adobe training classes in our lab, and over 50 certification exams have been delivered resulting in a strong presence of certified new media professionals in Manitoba.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival are looking for proposals from Canadian Aboriginal artists for audacious, innovative and socially relevant digital media works. Proposals can be for works in any digital medium and genre, including interactive documentary, mobile and locative media, interactive animation, photographic art and essay, data visualization, physical installation, community media, interactive video and user-generated media. Projects can be on any theme.

Three Winnipeggers were among the winners at the recent imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto last month. The Canwest Mentorship Program was awarded to Ervin Chartrand, whose credits include Patrick Ross where he won the ReelWorld Award for Outstanding Canadian Short Film at the 2006 ReelWorld Film Festival and 504938C for which he won the Best New Talent Award at the 2005 Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival.

The Canadian film industry owes a lot to producer Don Carmody’s Loyola University experience of being an early riser. Carmody sat down with On Screen Manitoba at a Red Carpet Affair honouring himself and William F. White CEO Paul Bronfman last week to discuss his rise in the film industry, his tips on becoming a successful producer and how his films are like his children. Despite an extensive film resume, which includes Meatballs, Chicago, Polytechnique and Goon (currently shooting in Winnipeg), Carmody says his first steps in becoming a producer was to do the jobs at film school that no one else wanted to do.

FTM Congratulates the Transmedia Production Lab Participants!

Film Training Manitoba gathered together a group of talented trainees and mentors for a weeklong production experiment designed on October 15 to 21 to help participants explore the creative challenges of developing a multi-platform project from start to finish.

The FTM Transmedia Production Lab saw participants split into two groups, and guided by two new media experts, Tony Walsh and Ryan FitzGerald. Each group consisted of both mentors and trainees working in tandem to produce several short form transmedia project prototypes.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending IN 10 – The Interactive Exchange, September 13-14 in Downtown Toronto. Manitoba Culture Days promises an action-packed weekend with over 150 free arts and culture activities in 53 venues across the province from September 24th to 26th.

Guy Maddin doesn't harbour any particular resentment towards the Toronto International Film Festival for rejecting his first feature, 1988's Tales From the Gimli Hospital. With the benefit of twenty-plus years of hindsight—during which time Maddin has cemented his repute as one of Canada's most important filmmakers—the decision of the TIFF bigwigs may seem like some great slight. But you can't really hold it against them. It's probably easy to regard an anachronistic 16mm film chock full of necrophilia, buttocks-grabbing contests, and fish-intestine hair conditioner as some bizarre midnight movie oddity, and not a calling card for a cinematic heavyweight.

TORONTO -- Among the guests at the Manitoba Night Party was Japanese filmmaker Toru Tokikawa, who plans to make an urban thriller titled Single Shot in Winnipeg next spring with producer Juliette Hagopian.

Producer Leah Pasuta of Four Seasons Films, one of the producers of a documentary on the making of Xavier Gens's apocalyptic thriller The Divide, attended along with Divide producer Ross Dinerstein. Pasuta's business card includes addresses in both Santa Monica California and Winnipeg, but she says she intends to be in Winnipeg more often to work on film projects. Pasuta says a final cut of The Divide, starring Michael Biehn and Milo Ventimiglia, has been locked and will hopefully debut at the Sundance Film Festival early in 2011.

So, I’ll admit that I came to Todd and the Book of Pure Evil with no small amount of trepidation. It was made worse by the fact that in the morning, when my press kit had arrived at home, I was tearing into the packaging as my kettle boiled. Pre-caffeine JM is a jumpy, fuzzy-brained creature. When the plastic severed finger dropped out of the press kit, I screamed loud enough that my neighbors gave me a dirty glare when they left later.

Film Training Manitoba is once again accepting applications for our Career Focus Program. As part of FTM’s Work Experience Program, the CFP will provide on-the-job training to new crewmembers. The purpose of this program is to match graduates from a post-secondary institution with production companies and/or film-related businesses such as equipment houses or production facilities.

This program is offered to youth up to the age of 30 (inclusive) and Film Training Manitoba works with production companies to provide participants with a full time, paid internship for a period of up to 8 weeks. All placements will be completed by July 31st, 2011.

Congratulations to Buffalo Gal Pictures Producer Liz Jarvis who has been selected participate in the Producers Lab Toronto (new this year) as part of the Toronto International Film Festival industry programmes.

Manitoba produced BLACK FIELD will screen at the Dark Bridges Film Festival in Saskatoon (Sun, Sept. 26, 1pm), selected as their Canadian Historical Drama (Part of Canada Culture Days). Writer/Director Danishka Esterhazy's beautiful dark historical drama is about two young sisters living alone on an isolated farm who become involved with a stranger who is interested in more than just spending a night in their barn while his horse rests. Admission for BLACK FIELD will be by donation for those who do not have a festival pass.

John Barnard's short film A Fable About Beauty has two Canadian festival dates this September starting with the Cabbagetown Short Film & Video Festival in Toronto, ON at the Winchester Theatre on September 10th at 7 pm. The second festival date is at Halifax, Nova Scotia's Atlantic Film Festival with the screening taking place on September 19th, at Park Lane, Theatre 7 at 7 PM. Barnard will be attending both festivals and screenings. A Fable About Beauty's international premiere was at the CFC's Short Film Festival in Toronto this past June.

Innovative Projects Seek $90 million

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced that the future of content and content delivery in Canada is being bolstered by home grown innovation, as evidenced by the strong demand for funding through the CMF's Experimental Stream. Applications submitted for funding by the first deadline, July 5, 2010, vastly exceeded the $16.2 million available at this round. Over 250 applicants have requested almost $90 million to support 120 production ($57 million requested), 112 development ($25 million requested), and 21 marketing ($8 million requested) projects. First round applicants represent all regions of Canada, and their projects include console, PC, and online games; alternate reality games; websites and webportals; webseries; mobile applications; software applications; and more.

CBC Television series Men With Brooms (Season 1) wraps up production in Winnipeg today, Friday, August 27, 2010 and with this reminder I am flooded with memories of the time I was fortunate enough to visit the set.

Directed and edited by John Barnard, Produced by Kyle Bornais is this little concert film made for CBC called RED ROAD. The show was recorded live at the West End Cultural Center in Winnipeg, 2010, and features bands Don Amero, Burnt Project 1, and Lucy Idlout. All the music is great and it airs this Saturday, August 28 at 7pm on CBC Manitoba.

As part of the commodity management process, the Government of Canada is reviewing the way in which it buys civilian audio visual equipment and is seeking information from suppliers. The Office of Small and Medium Enterprises (OSME), Public Works and Government Services (PWGSC), is facilitating input from suppliers through an initial consultation process. Based on feedback from these consultations, as well as research and market analysis, PWGSC will be developing a national strategy that will be in place for five years.

FTM TRANSMEDIA PRODUCTION LAB
October 15 - 21, 2010

In collaboration with New Media Manitoba, the TPL was designed to explore the creative challenges of developing multiplatform content from the ground up. Trainees and their mentors will be immersed in an intensive week of practical transmedia production, culminating in the creation of a series of new multiplatform prototypes. Fundamental concepts underlying transmedia production will be explored, such as:

· how to manifest a story on different platforms using different strategies
· the role of the audience and how they experience interactive media
· the pipeline and workflow of how successful teams work together
· the important elements of successful convergent media

CMF Industry Consultation 2010

Date for WINNIPEG consultation event: Wednesday, Sept 8th - Afternoon

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) will begin a new round of consultation sessions with the industry this fall. Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, and Stéphane Cardin, VP of Industry and Public Affairs, will meet with stakeholders across the country to gain input on key issues to be resolved prior to releasing the program guidelines for 2011-2012 in December.

Produced by Frantic Films, the show premiers Tuesday, August 31st. The Opener takes viewers on a dramatic and entertaining ride behind the scenes and into restaurants across North America. From money management and leadership to floor plans and staffing, David Adjey stops at nothing to avoid disaster.

The feature length horror film Aegri Somnia (A Sick Man's Dreams) produced by OSM Member Absurd Machine Films has just been distributed to Wal-Marts all across Canada for purchase!

The film was shot entirely in Manitoba utilizing about fifteen different locations as well as sets built in Absurd Machine Studios. All cast and crew are local - this production is as 'Manitoban' as you can get. Absurd Machine Studios President James Rewucki was the Writer/Director/Producer on this project.

It is with very mixed emotions that we share with you the news that we will be losing one of our strongest board members Mark Saidi who served on the Board of Directors as one of our Professional Services Chairs. Mark was the Senior Account Manager, Commercial Financial Services at Royal Bank of Canada and has been promoted to Deputy Vice President, Commercial Banking for Regina, Parkland and Southern Saskatchewan, and will be re-locating to Regina. Performance Envelope Calculation Factors

As a result of the consultation with the industry and funders of the Canada Media Fund (CMF), and in view of the policy direction from the federal government, the Board of the CMF has determined that the following factors will apply in the calculation of the performance envelopes for 2011-2012:
