KEYHOLE, directed by OSM members Guy Maddin and produced by Buffalo Gal Pictures, has won the $15,000 Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature Film, which was presented by the Directors Guild of Canada, BC and supported by Telefilm Canada at the eleventh annual Whistler Film Festival.

Named after the legendary Canadian filmmaker Phillip Borsos, the Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature Film recognizes creativity and passion in independent filmmakers.

KEYHOLE, which had its Western Canadian premiere at the festival, stars Jason Patric, Isabella Rossellini and Udo Kier. It is a rousing 1930s gangster picture set in a haunted house in which dream and waking life are seamlessly blended to isolate and expose universal feelings. The Jury says “Yahtzee!” and awarded KEYHOLE the Borsos award “for its inventiveness, audacity and humour.”

Announced on December 4, 2011, the Whistler Film Festival Society (WFFS) and Telefilm are working with China Film Group to create a program that will foster on-going opportunities for Canadian filmmakers to work with Chinese production companies. The goal of The China Canada Script Competition is to create co-productions that will cross over to both China’s domestic film market and the international film market. The domestic market in China has historically been beyond the reach of international productions, except for a handful of blockbuster-type films that make it onto Chinese screens each year.

The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) began talks today with the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) and the Association des producteurs de films et de télévision de Québec (APFTQ) toward a new agreement governing screenwriting for film, TV and digital media.

The solid partnership between producers and screenwriters is key to the success of the film and television industry in Canada. In 2009/2010, Canadian production was worth $2.3 Billion to the Canadian economy and led to the employment of an estimated 54,700 individuals on a full-time basis. Manitoba filmmaker Guy Maddin has been labeled the third best film director of the 21st Century by the esteemed film site Metacritic (www.metacritic.com).

In a poll that evaluated directors based on reviews of their films made since 2000, Maddin achieved an 81% approval rating, ranking him third out of 15 directors. This critical acclaim allowed him to outrank such high profile directors as Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies) and David Fincher (Fight Club).

In order to be eligible for the poll, directors had to have released at least four films since 2000, and each of these films had to have been reviewed at least seven times. Since 2000 Maddin has released five films including the Saddest Music in the World, Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary, My Winnipeg, Brand Upon the Brain and Cowards Bend the Knee or The Blue Hands. His latest film Keyhole premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this year and has not yet been released theatrically.

On October 26, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) launched the Canadian Feature Film Index. This index, created as a print index in 1972, is now available as an online database and contains information on over 4,300 Canadian feature films produced from 1913 to 2009. The database also features images of movie posters from LAC's holdings. Films produced after 2009 will be added gradually to the database. The project was carried out with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Prairie Producers Initiative at Real Screen Summit 2012

The 12th edition of the Gimli Film Festival will be celebrated July 25th to July 29th, 2012. The festival showcases entertaining documentaries, dramas and shorts from Manitoba, Canada and the world, with a particular emphasis on circumpolar countries. Our unique 11-meter outdoor screen on the shores of Lake Winnipeg is a main attraction, screening a feature film each night while four indoor venues screen more then130 films during the festival’s five-day run.

Winnipeggers are being treated to a feast of FREE animation screenings and activities from October 22 to November 6, 2011, with the fifth edition of the National Film Board of Canada’s Get Animated! program. Get Animated! is a national NFB program that brings the experience of great animation to over 20 cities across Canada in celebration of International Animation Day, October 28.

Winnipeg’s Get Animated! program will be presented in English at the Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque (100 Arthur Street) and in French at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain (340 Provencher Boulevard, Saint-Boniface). Winnipeg partners for Get Animated! include On Screen Manitoba and the Freeze Frame Media Arts Centre for Young People.

Farpoint Films is in production on a rock-doc feature film that chronicles the band The Sheepdogs after their Rolling Stone magazine cover story. Directing the film is Farpoint Films' own John Barnard.

Enigmatico Films and Buffalo Gal Pictures are pleased to announce that production is underway on the feature film Mad Ship.

The 18-day shooting schedule takes place in various locations in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba, including the towns of Selkirk and Holland. Prior to filming in Manitoba, two days of shooting took place in northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle, on an island called Senja. Production wraps in Winnipeg on October 27.

A new video that OSM member Steve Langston (Dirty T-Shirt Productions) produced and directed about Dauphin's Countryfest is now available for viewing.

The Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) released two studies this week, and requested that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) launch a specific public proceeding to examine the role of television broadcasters in supporting Canadian English-language theatrical films.

Both studies relate to Canadian theatrical films – one on the financing provided by broadcasters to English-language films supported under the Canada Feature Film Fund and one related to the broadcast of films in our television system.

The Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) welcomes the federal government’s move to modernize Canada’s copyright laws. The Copyright Modernization Act was tabled in the House of Commons earlier this week. It mirrors Bill C-32 which died on the Order Paper when the election was called last spring.

Cineflix Rights has closed an unprecedented number of sales to broadcasters across the Nordic region in the run up to MIPCOM. The distributor has signed volume deals for 39 shows with TV4 and Kanal 5 Sweden, TV Norge and TLC Norway, Nelonen Finland, Viasat Denmark, and the BBC and TLC for pan-Scandinavian broadcast. In total, nearly 450 hours of product have now been sold to the region’s top broadcasters over the past year, including Princess, produced by Frantic Films.

In order to address the current inconsistencies or conflicts between the Canada Media Fund (CMF) program Guidelines and the Terms of Trade Agreement that was reached last April by the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) and private broadcasters Astral Television Networks, Bell Media Inc., Rogers Broadcasting Limited, Shaw Media Inc. and Corus Entertainment Inc., the CMF has adopted changes to its Guidelines for all production programs in the Convergent Stream.

Farpoint Films and Bottle Rocket World Entertainment are pleased to announce that The Paper Nazis has won a 2011 Accolade Award of Excellence. The Accolade is an International award that honours exceptional achievement in craft in creativity in television production.

The National Film Board of Canada announced on August 11, 2011 that OSM board member Brendon Sawatzky will assume the role of Producer at the NFB’s North West Centre Winnipeg office during Alicia Smith’s maternity leave. Sawatzky will act as an NFB Producer for 14 months, beginning on August 15; Smith’s leave begins in late September. The NFB Producer in Winnipeg works with directors, producers and digital media makers in Manitoba to produce documentary and animation, as well as interactive projects.

The CMPA has successfully negotiated, on behalf of its members and the entire Canadian independent production sector, a Terms of Trade agreement that came into effect June 1st 2011. This is a historic deal that will redefine the relationship between producers and broadcasters.

Through the generosity of Investors Group, The Banff Centre has awarded Manitoba filmmaker Adam Smoluk a substantial scholarship to attend the Leadership Development program. Only six scholarships are awarded to Manitobans annually.
