INDEPENDENT PRODUCER PANEL SERIES FEATURES OSM MEMBERS

Source: Uptown Magazine

The following article, featuring OSM members Kyle Bornais, Brendon Sawatzky and Liz Jarvis, was written by Kenton Smith and originally published in Uptown on June 2 in anticipation of the Winnipeg Film Group's panel series: The Independent Producer that takes place Friday June 3.

PRODUCE THIS

Cinematheque hosts a panel of local film industry experts on the secrets of successful independent producing

By: Kenton Smith

"So you’re a producer…what exactly do you do?"

This 2007 headline from a Guardian story has been a recurring question for as long as movie producers have… produced. For his part, producer Kyle Bornais of Winnipeg-based film, TV and digital media production company Farpoint Films likes to answer it with an anecdote.

"A producer friend of mine in L.A. answered: ‘Try making a movie without one,’" Bornais says.

As producer Stephen Evans (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) explains, as quoted in that Guardian article from the book What I Really Want to Do is Produce: his role can involve everything from finding a project to hiring a writer and/or director to finding the money to playing middleman to the studios and financiers to acting as a creative collaborator.

DEADLINE TODAY - GIMLI FILM FESTIVAL SHORT FILM CONTEST

Source: Gimli Film Festival

The Gimli Film Festival invites all filmmakers to create a short tribute to, or history of Lake Winnipeg – with actual historical facts being completely optional. It’s the spirit that counts.

Films can be any style or genre as long as it’s made in Manitoba, and appropriate for a family audience.

Films will be judged on pure cinematic quality and the effectiveness with which it captures and communicates the essence of “The Lake.” The top 10 films will be screened at the 11th edition of the Gimli Film Festival taking place July 20-24, 2011.

The business of Canadian television is coming back in a big way but the return of advertising dollars and the rise in specialty channels seems to be coming somewhat at the expense of jobs at conventional stations.

Overall, Canadian TV saw high single-digit and double-digit revenue gains for the year ending Aug. 31, 2010, according to new figures released by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Thursday.

Bands vs. Filmmakers — a multimedia fundraising celebration for Cinematheque — brings together two of Winnipeg's most vibrant scenes

By: Kenton Smith

Some so-called "high concepts" — i.e., ideas for "creative" endeavours summarized in a pat phrase or two — simply drip with artistic bankruptcy and crass commercialism. Examples include the 2004 Alien vs. Predator movie, or the 1992 comic book "death" of Superman.

And then there are just great ideas — such as Bands vs Filmmakers, a music and multimedia fundraising celebration for Winnipeg’s premier arthouse movie theatre, Cinematheque. The event goes down at the West End Cultural Centre on June 2.
