TIFF 2011: AND THAT'S THE KIND OF WEEK IT WAS
Source: Uptown The following article was written by John Scoles about his time at TIFF and was originally published in Uptown on September 22, 2011.
Looking Back: There’s a point in every question-and-answer period that follows every film in every venue and every genre in which somebody begins their so-called question with, "This isn’t really a question, but I…" It’s a painful moment, a disappointing moment, even an embarrassing one. But it’s inevitable and therefore, if not judged, it stands as a kind of reflection of the filmmaker and the film itself. Sometimes there is no question. Sometimes there is just the thing itself.
I came to TIFF with lots of questions. It’s my first major film festival, and here I am not just a guy in the back with an interest, but a filmmaker with an official selection making its world premiere. I was to be a person that someone might actually ask a question of. What would that be like? |

CRTC REWRITES RULES FOR MOBILE BROADCASTING
Source: Globe And Mail The following article was originally published in The Globe And Mail on September 21, 2011.
Canada’s broadcasting regulator has introduced a new set of controls on how television content can be sold, in a move that will curb BCE Inc.’s plans to use programming to boost its wireless business.
Wireless companies that also own TV channels must offer all their content on fair terms to competing mobile phone providers for their smart phone and tablet devices, and on the Internet, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission said Wednesday. |

WNDX: THE ANTI TIFF?
Source: Uptown The following article was written by Kenton Smith and was originally published in Uptown on September 22, 2011.
Sixth annual local film and video art fest WNDX has carved its niche by celebrating cinematic innovation
BY: KENTON SMITH
Call it a celebration of leading-edge Prairie cinema.
"A focus on innovation and special attention to Prairie region artists is always the focus," says Cecilia Araneda, programming committee member of the now-annual WNDX: Winnipeg’s Festival of Film & Video Art. Now in its sixth year, this year’s WNDX runs Sept. 29 to Oct. 2.
In light of his death this month, a major highlight for 2011 is the world premiere of celebrated underground filmmaker George Kuchar’s The Nutrient Express. A headliner in 2010, Kuchar’s "discussions" with Winnipeg wunderkind Guy Maddin from last year are available on YouTube. |

TELEFILM CANADA ANNOUNCES THAT MONSIEUR LAZHAR IS CANADA'S SELECTION FOR 2012 OSCARS
Source: Telefilm Canada Telefilm Canada, which chairs the pan-Canadian Oscar selection committee, is proud to announce that the feature film Monsieur Lazhar, directed by Philippe Falardeau, has been submitted as Canada’s choice for consideration as a possible nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 84th Academy Awards, to be held in Hollywood on February 26, 2012.
This honour is only the latest of the awards the film has recently won. In August, at the 64th Locarno International Film Festival, Monsieur Lazhar picked up the Variety Piazza Grande Award, given in recognition of a work’s artistic qualities and commercial viability, as well as the UBS Audience Award. After winning over movie-goers in Switzerland, the movie did the same at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the City of Toronto Award for Best Canadian Feature Film. |
