CMF LAUNCHES A DIGITAL MEDIA PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT FRAMEWORK http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/rss#4995 http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/rss#4995 Wed, 16 May 2012 00:00:00 -0500 On Screen Manitoba The Canada Media Fund (CMF) launched today a Digital Media Performance Measurement Framework, as the result of a consultation with industry stakeholders. This new tool is designed to measure the performance of digital media projects funded through the CMF’s Convergent and Experimental Streams through a process that includes classifying projects and collecting metrics on key performance indicators.

In developing this framework, the CMF has set-out to attain the following objectives:

  1. Define a standard set of digital media performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPI) that would apply to all CMF programs.

  2. Meet requirements from the Department of Canadian Heritage to report on audience and usage of digital media projects

  3. Establish the bases for developing weighting factors that apply to digital media performance measurement, and which would ultimately serve to calculate performance envelopes.

“This is a solid first step in establishing a unified approach to digital media performance measurement,” says Valerie Creighton, President and CEO. “By working with a national advisory committee composed of 32 industry stakeholders from digital production, producers’ associations, broadcasters, and other funding bodies, the CMF was able to develop an effective and sustainable framework that will set a new standard of digital media reporting. We wish to thank all who have contributed their time, expertise and ideas to make this achievement possible.”

The Digital Media Performance Measurement Framework is applicable to all digital media components funded through the Convergent Stream (excluding TV and VOD) and all projects funded through the Experimental Stream. In addition, producers of funded projects will have access to an online reporting form to report on audience and consumption data for funded projects.

Details on the Digital Media Performance Measurement Framework are available on the CMF website. A section of the CMF online forum will be dedicated to this framework, allowing stakeholders to share comments and ask questions.

SMPIA CALLS FOR CABINET MINISTER TO BE REMOVED http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/rss#4990 http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/rss#4990 Thu, 10 May 2012 00:00:00 -0500 On Screen Manitoba The Saskatchewan Media Production Industry Association called upon Premier Brad Wall today to remove Bill Hutchinson as the Minister of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport and replace him with someone who has a better understanding of the film, TV and digital industry.

“The actions of this Minister have brought a $50 million annual industry to the brink of disaster. He has consistently ignored our concerns and brought forward a program that will not work. We respectfully ask the Premier of Saskatchewan to remove this Minister and replace him with an individual that understands the issues and will help us develop a program that will work for the industry,” said Ron Goetz.

During the recent provincial budget, the Government of Saskatchewan announced the elimination of funding to the Saskatchewan Film Employment Tax Credit, which has supported the growth and development of the film and digital media industry in the province. Since that announcement the industry has been working to develop a new incentive program that will enable the industry to remain competitive.

The industry presented a draft plan to the Minister with the intention of working with the government to develop a new incentive program. The following day the Minister announced a program that was not endorsed by the industry and has a significant flaw that makes it unworkable. The program contains a non-refundable tax credit and the industry requires a refundable tax credit.

“This program will simply not work and the manner in which it was released makes it very difficult for our industry to work with the current Minister. It would best serve the people of Saskatchewan if a new Minister with a better understanding of our industry were named to help us create a program that will keep our industry in Saskatchewan,” said Goetz.

He added there is still time for the government to develop a program that will keep the industry alive in Saskatchewan, but the longer this process takes, the more difficult it becomes for the industry to attract outside investment.

For more information contact Ron Goetz at (306) 525-6361.

MANITOBA MUSIC INDUSTRY COURTS L.A. MARKET http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/rss#4989 http://www.onscreenmanitoba.com/rss#4989 Thu, 10 May 2012 00:00:00 -0500 On Screen Manitoba There will be plenty of Manitoba music in Los Angeles this month when a local trade mission heads to the hot California music market. Four Manitoba artists and entrepreneurs from several Manitoba-based companies will make their way south to do business with some of the industry’s leading players at a market development event at the Canadian Consul General’s Official Residence on May 29.

Coordinated by Manitoba Music in partnership with Manitoba Film & Music, and featuring a showcase and networking opportunity, the trade mission builds on the success of past events in Los Angeles. The initiative allows Manitoba artists and companies to develop critical business contacts and expand to new markets.

“Los Angeles is a major market of interest for Manitoba companies and represents the best avenue for accessing the ever-growing area of film, television, trailer, and game placements for music,” says Sara Stasiuk, Manitoba Music’s executive director. “The connections made at events like these are key to helping our talented and accomplished artists and entrepreneurs achieve the next level of success.”

Performers include JUNO Award-winning singer/songwriter Ruth Moody, acoustic pop troubadour JP Hoe, up-and-coming pop act James Struthers, and indie upstarts The Treble.

Representatives from companies rounding out the Manitoba delegation include some of this province’s most active and innovative managers, labels, and producers: Stephen Carroll of Empirical Artist Services (The Weakerthans, Imaginary Cities), CBG Artist Development’s Chris Burke-Gaffney, producer/songwriter Arun Chaturvedi, Vince Fontaine of Rising Sun Productions (Eagle & Hawk, Indian City), Mike Petkau Falk of Head In The Sand Records (Les Jupes, Royal Canoe), RoseAnna Schick of RAS Creative (Don Amero), and McKinley Entertainment’s Ben McKinley (The Treble).

Many of the Manitoba delegation received travel assistance from the Market Access Program, a program jointly funded by Manitoba Music and Manitoba Film & Music with the purpose of supporting Manitoba artists and music industry professionals in career development, and attending and enhancing their presence at professionally organized music industry conferences and showcases.

Manitoba Music has presented successful showcases and events at Reeperbahn, MIDEM, Musexpo, North by Northeast, International Folk Alliance, Canadian Music Week, and South by Southwest. These showcases are an initiative of Manitoba Music’s Market Development Program, which is funded by the Government of Canada and Province of Manitoba through the Canada-Manitoba Economic Partnership Agreement, and by FACTOR with the support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage (Canada Music Fund) and of Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters.
