On Screen Manitoba

Nicole Matiation, Executive Director

Nicole is the Executive Director of On Screen Manitoba (the provincial professional association for the film and television and media industry). This past year she was Project Manager, Manitoba for Culture Days, implementing the first annual Culture Days, a highly successful event with over 26,000 participants attending some 150 activities in Manitoba.

Nicole has an MA in Media Arts from Concordia University and has held communications, development, programming and management positions in the arts sector for 20 years. This includes work at the National Film Board of Canada in Montreal coordinating an in-house film festival and a video distribution project using animated shorts to teach English and media literacy to adults in Eastern Europe. Recently, Nicole had a term contract with Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Tourism as the Cultural Industries Consultant and a term contract with Manitoba Education to develop the curriculum for a Grade 12, 20th century history course using film.

In 1996 Nicole founded Freeze Frame Media Arts Centre for Young People with her partner, filmmaker, Pascal Boutroy. The non-profit bilingual organisation produces media arts projects for and with young people including an annual international film festival. Co-director from 1996-200, Nicole was the sole artistic/executive director from 2000 to 2008.

A committed volunteer, Nicole has mentored several young workers. She is the Chair of the Arts and Cultural Industries Association of Manitoba and the liaison between the Event Planning Committee and the Marketing Planning Committee for The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s 2012 Centennial Celebration.

Nicole est la Directrice générale de On Screen Manitoba, l’association provincial de l’industrie de vidéo et de film. Cette dernière année Nicole était la gestionnaire du projet au Manitoba pour la Fête de la culture, responsable de la mis en œuvre de la première édition de la Fête de la culture au Manitoba. Un événement à succès qui a attiré quelques 26,000 participants à plus de 150 activités à travers le Manitoba.

Nicole a une maîtrise en arts médiatiques de l’université Concordia et a travaillé dans les communications, le développement, la programmation et la gestion dans le secteur culturel depuis 20 ans. Ceci inclut des contrats avec l’Office national du film à Montréal où elle a organisé un festival de film interne, coordonner un projet de compilation de courts métrages avec des guides pour soutenir l’apprentissage de l’anglais et la découverte de la littéracie médiatique destiné aux adultes en l’Europe de l’est. Plus récemment Nicole était la conseillère en industries culturelles à Culture, Patrimoine et Tourism Manitoba et a eu un contrat à terme pour produire un curriculum de 12e année pour enseigner l’histoire du 20e siècle par le biais du film.

En 1996, avec son partenaire, scénariste-réalisateur Pascal Boutroy, Nicole a fondé le centre des arts médiatiques pour jeunes : Freeze Frame. Un organisme dédi àa la production de projet en arts médiatiques pour et avec des jeunes, y compris un festival de film international annuel. Co-directrice de 1996 à 2000, Nicole était la directrice générale et artistique de l’organisme de 2000 à 2008.

Une bénévole dévouée Nicole a fait le mentorat de plusieurs jeunes travailleurs dans le secteur. Elle est la présidente de « The Arts and Cultural Industries Association of Manitoba » et la liaison entre le « Event Planning Committee » et le « Marketing Planning Committee » pour le centenaire du Musée des beaux arts de Winnipeg prévu en 2012.

Michael is a filmmaker, directing and producing over two dozen short films, and a writer with several completed shorts, and two features in one draft or another. He is excited to be working with the On Screen Manitoba team. Getting to know the filmmakers here, and working with them as the Member Services Assistant has been his favorite part of his experience here.

Trevor Suffield, Communications Coordinator

Trevor joined On Screen Manitoba in the fall of 2010 after spending two years as the reporter for The Metro community newspaper.

A graduate from the Red River College Creative Communications program, Trevor has worked behind the scenes on more than 20 locally produced short films and music videos over the years as a camera assistant, grip, writer's assistant and shot behind-the-scenes interviews for the feature film Wild Cherry.

In his spare time Trevor enjoys working on his own short and feature length scripts, and looks forward to continue to the share success stories of OSM members with the world.

Laurence Véron, Membership and Francophone Initiative Coordinator 

Laurence Véron is a bilingual Manitoban writer-director. Born in Paris, France, she started her career in Saint-Boniface with Les Productions Rivard in 1999. Her documentary on Franco-Manitoban literature, Le Blé Et La Plume, received two 2001 Blizzard awards for best non-dramatic directing and for best cinematography. Since then, she has worked on various TV documentary-series, one-off documentaries and short-films. Laurence has studied dramatic writing and directing at the Institut national de l’image et du son in Montreal, and at the Women in the Director’s Chair Workshop at the Banff Center under internationally-reknown Canadian director Léa Pool. Her passion for film includes all aspects of the trade: she has also worked as a picture-editor on a feature-film and several documentaries, and as camera-person/director/editor for a Web mini-series produced in Charlottetown, PEI.

Laurence sat on the board of Cinemental, Manitoba’s French-language film festival, for several years. She is also a founding-member of the Front des réalisateurs indépendants du Canada (FRIC), a national organization for independent filmmakers working in French outside of Quebec. As the Francophone Initiative Coordinator, Laurence is the voice of Manitoba’s Francophone screen-based media community, eager to support her peers and anyone who is interested in creating en français!

Laurence Véron est une scénariste-réalisatrice bilingue du Manitoba. Originaire de Paris en France, elle a commencé sa carrière à Saint-Boniface avec les Productions Rivard en 1999. Sa passion pour les fims inclut tous les aspects du métier: elle a également travaillé comme monteuse sur un long-métrage de fiction et plusieurs documentaires, et elle a tourné/réalisé/monté une mini-série Web produite à Charlottetown, I.P.É.

Laurence a siégé pendant plusieurs années au conseil d’administration de Cinémental, le festival des films francophones du Manitoba. Elle est également un des membres fondateurs du Front des réalisateurs indépendants du Canada (FRIC), un organisme national regroupant les cinéastes indépendants francophones à l’extérieur du Québec. Depuis octobre 2010, en tant que Coordinatrice du volet francophone, Laurence incarne la voix de l’industrie francophone du Manitoba, bien déterminée à soutenir sa communauté et toute personne qui voudrait créer en français!
