Legal Considerations for Music Use in Media Production

Explore the various ways that music can legally be included in films and TV series, and other productions – from diving into composer agreements to master use and synchronization licenses. 

Facilitated by entertainment lawyer Byron Pascoe of Edwards Creative Law, the session is designed primarily for film producers and filmmakers, while remaining intentionally cross-disciplinary for composers, musicians and music producers.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the legal frameworks that govern the use of music in film, television, and other productions, including: 

  • Composer agreements and independent contractor considerations

  • Synchronization and master use licences 

  • Music rights clearance and chain of title obligations 

  • Common legal risks and how to avoid them 

  • Music-related considerations for errors and omissions (E&O) insurance 

The session will also touch on how these principles extend to other screen-based content, including digital media and interactive projects.

About the Facilitator 

Byron Pascoe is an entertainment lawyer with a focus on music and film/TV law. He works with recording artists, film/TV producers, managers, music service businesses, and festivals across Canada.

Prior to law school, Byron was a television and new media producer.

He is a board member of CityFolk, a member of Music BC and CARAS, and a recipient of the Community Impact Award at the Capital Music Awards.
